Baseball Fires Away On Lions

The Bucs blasted 18 hits and scored 12 runs

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers captured a solid 12-3 rebound victory over the Saint Leo Lions on Thursday to open up Sunshine State Conference play at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.

SUMMARY:

  • T2 - Richie Sobalvarro led off with a single, advanced on a walk by Derek Smolenski and a single by JC Garcia. Sobalvarro scored when Garcia got caught in a rundown. | Barry 1, Saint Leo 0
  • T3 - The Bucs put another two runs up on the board on an Andrew Rapoza double that smacked down the third base line and brought home two runs in Chase Ashby and Blake Brito, who had both singled. | Barry 3, Saint Leo 0
  • B5 - Frank Gonzalez let up just his third hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth, but unfortunately the ball from Eddie Neimann III floated over the fence in left field and scored Cooper Trinkle, who had reached on an error. | Barry 3, Saint Leo 2
  • T6 - Barry began to channel the same the offense that scared the country in 2020, scoring a massive seven runs in the inning fueled by an RBI double by Brito and a two-run bomb over the right fence by Ashby. | Barry 10, Saint Leo 2
  • T7 - Brito blasted his first homer as a Buc in the seventh with two outs. | Barry 11, Saint Leo 2
  • T9 - Brito capped the scoring with an RBI single in the ninth, scoring pinch runner Branden Abreu. | Barry 12, Saint Leo 2
  • B9 - Anthony Boix surrendered a lead-off home run to Brody Slaughter but bore down to retire the next three batter consecuvitvely including a looking strikeout of Owen Jansen. | Barry 12, Saint Leo 3

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Gonzalez (1-0) looked the part in his season debut, letting up just four hits in five innings before being relieved by Micheal Reagan, who went three scoreless innings, and Boix. Gonzalez struck out four and did not walk a batter.
  • Joey Antonopoulos (0-1) took the loss for the Lions. He gave up three runs on five hits and a walk and struck out three in three innings.
  • Brito had an outstanding game for the Bucs, going without an error to go along with nine putouts and hitting 4-for-5 with four RBI.
  • All but one of Barry's starters recorded hits. In addition to Brito, Sobalvarro and Garcia each had three hits, while Ashby, Rapoza and David Vazquez had two.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will look forward to another two games against the Lions with a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 7. The first game is scheduled for 2:00 pm at Feinbloom Field.
