Women's Basketball Rallies Past Sailfish

Bucs win third straight at home

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers rallied past the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 59-50 on Wednesday night on Cesar Odio Court in women's basketball action from the Health & Sports Center.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Bucs started out ice cold from the floor, missing their first four shots and trailing 10-2 after the first four minutes. But they picked up the pace, turning defense into offense in a 13-4 run that gave them their first lead on a layup by Taylor Fowler with 0:25 seconds left. Chiara Fusari kept the Bucs in it with a team-high eight points in the period. | PBA 16, Barry 15
  • 2Q - The defense clamped down in the second period for the Bucs. They held the Sailfish to just six points in the paint, after surrendering 14 in the first quarter, and forced seven PBA turnovers that led to 11 points. Harriet Swindells had seven points to pace the team. | Barry 34, PBA 27
  • 3Q - The Sailfish cut the lead to three in the third quarter behind seven points from Avree Carpenter. They got a handle on the ball, turning it over just once in the period. Ashia Pool and Ashleigh Pink combined to score all nine points for Barry in the frame. | Barry 43, PBA 40
  • 4Q - Swindells opened the period with a three-pointer, part of a 13-2 run to start the fourth quarter, giving Barry a 56-42 lead. The maintained a double-figure lead until Jada Garbutt connected with 2:18 remaining to cut the lead to nine. The teams traded free throws down the stretch. | Barry 59, PBA 50

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Swindells had a season-high 15 points to led the Bucs, adding five assists and five rebounds.
  • Fusari chipped in 12 points and two steals.
  • Carpenter led the 'Fish with 15 points and Sia Williams had 12. Shekinah Guthrie had 15 rebounds.
  • Rebounding was even in the game, 42-42, although the Bucs led 15-9 on the offensive glass.
  • Barry improved to 3-0 at home this season.
  • The win was the third straight in the series for the Bucs and the sixth of the last seven.

Barry hosts the defending Sunshine State Conference champs, Tampa, on Saturday, Feb. 20 on Cesar Odio Court at 4:00 pm.
