Women's Basketball Loses At Saint Leo

Bucs fall to Lions on the road

ST. LEO, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers lost a road game to the Saint Leo Lions 77-68 in the Bowman Center in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Lions jumped out to an early lead, going up six points, 8-2, on a three-point play by Amanda Ulrich at the 8:07 mark. Barry came back to tie the game 17-17 on a pair of free throws by Harriet Swindells with 2:22 to play and it was tied again at 19-19 by a Carly Sanders bucket with less than a minute remaining.   • 2Q - The second period went back a forth, by leading 28-25 with 6:23 left in the frame, the Lions went on an 11-0 run, capped by an Alex Button three-pointer. Barry clawed back to under 10 thanks to six points from Swindells, including a three-point buzzer beater. | SLU 41, Barry 33
  • 3Q - The Bucs came out of the locker room firing, cutting the lead to one, 46-45 in the first five minutes of the quarter. But the Lions made a run of their own to push the lead back to 10 and at the end of the quarter, the teams were where they had started. | SLU 60, Barry 52
  • 4Q - Barry cut the lead to three, 71-68, on a three-pointer by Chiara Fusari with 1:21 to play, but those were the last points for the Bucs as Casey O'Shaughnessy hit a tripe and Alani Gallagher sank a pair of free throws to ice the game. | SLU 77, Barry 68

NOTEWORTHY:

  • All five Buccaneer starters scored in double figures, led by 13 points from Nerea Baena.
  • Fusari and Ashliegh Pick each had 11 points, with Pink adding a team-high four assists.
  • Emma Hergot and Swindells each had 10 points.
  • Button led the Lions with 20 points, while Gallagher chipped in 19. Amanda Ulrich added 11.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs host the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
