Bucs Split Matches in Day Two at Colorado Premier Challenge

The Buccaneers took down the tournament host, MSU Denver 3-2

DENVER, Colo. –  During day two of the Colorado Premier Challenge Barry took on MSU Denver and No. 11-ranked Ferris State on the campus of MSU Denver. In the first match against MSU Denver, Barry won 25-20, 17-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12. In the second match against Ferris State, the Buccaneers fell in five sets 11-25, 25-23, 20-25, 22-25, 8-15.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"Great tournament for our team," said head coach Steve Hendricks, "We went 1-3 but played four very good teams and high level volleyball all weekend. Every player contributed and the experience was fantastic. We are headed into the very tough Sunshine State Conference with a lot of confidence and a desire to reach our potential."

All-Time Series: This is Barry's first game vs. MSU-Denver and now leads Ferris State 3-0

First Match

  • 1st set | Despite five ball-handling errors and two service errors, the Bucs were able to take the first set. Barry hit .296 as a team and Megi Buvinic started off hot again with seven kills. 
  • 2nd set | Barry has struggled with the second set during the tournament and didn't help their cause here giving up the first four points to the Roadrunners. 
  • 3rd set | MSU Denver led 19-14 before the Bucs scored five straight points to tie things up at 20. The Roadrunners would finish out the set with their own 5-0 run to go up 2-1. 
  • 4th set | Six kills from Kristina Filliminova propelled the Bucs to a fifth set.
  • 5th set | MSU-Denver stumbled in the final set, committing six attacking errors and opening the door for Barry to capture the victory

Second Match

  • 1st set | Kishara Gordon and Gabriela Jansen both chipped in two kills a piece but the Bucs feel in the first frame after Ferris State started the set off on a 10-3 run. 
  • 2nd set | The Bucs rallied and took home a close set two behind four kills from Brittany Reynolds
  • 3rd set | 10 assists from Juliana Tirabassi fueled Barry to victory in the third set.
  • 4th set | The fourth set proved to be another battle with 12 ties and six lead changes in the frame.
  • 5th set | Barry got off to a 4-1 lead but ultimately Ferris State rallied and capped off the set with two service aces from Courtney Brewer

NOTEWORTHY:.

  • Pasca and Buvinic each had double-doubles in the match against Lewis. Buvinic then finished with her second of the day against UCM.
  • Rose is 172 digs away from becoming the 8th Buccaneer player to record 1,000 digs in their career
  • Pasca recorded a season-high 43 assists against UCM while averaging 9.11 assists per set in the two matches.

ON THE HORIZON:

Next up for the Bucs is a trip to Lynn University on Sep. 20 to open up conference play.
