Baseball Staves Off Tars In 13 innings

Ariel Diaz hit a two-run homer in the 13th

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers worked overtime to beat the Rollins Tars 9-8 on Friday in 13 innings at Alfond Stadium in Winter Park, Fla.

SUMMARY:

  • T1 - Freddie Matos hit a solo homer with one out. Chris Cabrera walked, moved to second on a passed ball by catcher Jared Herron. Andrew Rapoza singled to knock him in, then stole second and scored on a base hit by Richie Sobalvarro. | Barry 3, Rollins 0
  • B1 - Jack Gonzalez answered the Barry homer with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the inning. | Barry 3, Rollins 1
  • T2 - Arrison Perez walked and scored on a single by Matos. | Barry 4, Rollins 1
  •  T5 - Rapoza and Sobalvarro singled with one out. Derek Smolenski knocked in Rapoza with a base hit to left. Omar Baldo beat out an infield single to score Sobalvarro. | Barry 6, Rollins 1
  • B5 - The Tars tied the game with four runs in the fifth. Jarod Herron was hit by a pitch from Buccaneer starter Erislandy Rives. Brendan Brundage and Sam LaFontaine had back-to-back singles to plate one run.   • T7 - Cabrera drew a leadoff walk. Rapoza laid down a sacrifice, but Tars' pitcher Whitt Drennan threw the ball away at first, allowing Cabrera to move all the way around to third and Rapoza to reach. Cabrera scored on a fielder's choice by Sobalvarro. | Barry 7, Rollins 5

  • T13 - Ariel Diaz blasted a two-run homer to right, scoring Deyvid Silva who had been hit by a pitch. | Barry 9, Rollins 7
  • B13 - The Tars strung together  three straight hits with one out to load the bases, and Gonzalez drove in a run with a fly ball. But Hugo Casilla got Meehan looking to end the game. | Barry 9, Rollins 8

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Mike Reagan (1-0) worked two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just a walk and striking out one to earn his first collegiate win.
  • Drennan (2-3) took the loss for the Tars, throwing 111 pitches over 6.2 innings in relief. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks and struck out nine.
  • Rapoza was 6-for-6 in the ball game. It is the first 6-for-6 game in school history and ties Joey Perez who had six hits in eight at-bats at Florida Gulf Coast on April 8, 2003 for the most hits in a game.
  • Sobalvarro and Matos both had two hits and drove in two runs. Diaz, with his homer, also drove in a pair.
  • Brundage and LaFontaine each had three hits for the Tars. Meehan drove in three before striking out to end the game.
  • The 13-inning game is the longest for the Buccaneers since the last time they visited Rollins. The Bucs won 6-5 in 13 innings on April 22, 2017.

ON THE HORIZON:

The series finale has been postponed until Saturday at 1:00 pm due to inclement weather in the Orlando metro area.
