Softball Splits DH with Queens College

Peyton Rawls made her debut in the circle as a pitcher during game two.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Buccaneers split their double-header against Queens College (NY) on Thursday at Buccaneer Field. Barry took the first of two today vs. the Knights 4-1, but dropped the second by the final score of 6-3.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Game One Final: Barry 4, Queens 1
Game Two Final: Queens 6, Barry 3
Records: Barry (10-22), QC (2-6)
All-Time Record: Barry leads 4-1

WHAT ARE THEY SAYING:
"Peyton being able to get her first career start in the circle was pretty cool," Bucs head coach Sean Cotter said. "She gave us an opportunity to win and threw well. I thought Arianna Diaz did a great job at first base, where she hasn't practiced at all, but I thought she had really good at-bats on the day," Cotter added. Despite earning the loss, Peyton Rawls was impressive in her first career start as a pitcher. It seemed as if she ran out of gas in the fifth inning after walking the bases loaded, but through the first four innings, she showed command of the strike zone. "Peyton likes to fool around with pitching on the side and we had talked [about her pitching in a game] a little bit about it earlier in the year and she was hesitant. Then yesterday in practice she said she would pitch today," Cotter said.

SUMMARY:
Game One

  • B1 - Lynsey Duncan started things quickly for the Bucs with a double to center field. After Rawls drew a walk, Andrea Johnson was due up with runners on first and second, one out. Johnson blasted her second home run of the season over the left field fence to put the Bucs in command right away. | Barry 3, QC 0
  • B6 - Barry picked up an insurance run when Aliana Bonilla laid down a bunt with runners on second and third. The bunt allowed Johnson to score from third base. | Barry 4, QC 0
  • T7 - The Knights scored a run on three hits in the inning before running themselves out of the inning on a play at second base. | Barry 4, QC 1

SUMMARY:
Game Two

  • T1 - The Knights took a page from the Sean Cotter hand book with runners on first and third. The QC runner took off from first and baited Bucs' catcher Fallon Dragich to make the throw to second. The throw was off-line and required a diving effort by Ayana Andrade-Zygmunt to prevent the ball from going to center field. The runner on third scored for the Knights. | QC 1, Barry 0
  • T3 - Queen's shortstop Noelle Bryggman was a tough out for Barry all day as she went 4-for-6 in the two games against the Bucs. She scored one fo the two runs for the Knights in the inning on a two out base-hit up the middle. | QC 3, Barry 0
  • T5 - The Knights scored three runs on two hits in the inning. Barry stopped the bleeding that could've led to a bigger inning when the Knights' runner tried to tag from third on a shallow fly ball. Karla Santiago gunned down the runner at home, ending the inning for the Knights. | QC 6, Barry 0.
  • B5 - Johnson came up to hit for the Bucs with the bases loaded and one out. She would drive in a run on a fielders choice, when the QC shortstop threw to third base and forced out Duncan. | QC 6, Barry 1.
  • B6 - Colin recorded her third hit of the game and later scored on a ground ball by Andrade Zygmunt. | QC 6, Barry 2
  • B7 - Rawls hit her third home run of the season to dead center field as the Bucs grabbed a run in the final inning, but came up short in game two against the Knights. | QC 6, Barry 3.
