Baseball Posts First-Ever Sweep of Florida Southern

Bucs take Saturday's doubleheader 8-0 and 11-2

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers posted their first-ever sweep of the Florida Southern Moccasins with 8-0, 11-2 wins in a doubleheader at Henley Field in Sunshine State Conference baseball action on Saturday.

GAME ONE:

  • T2 - Ariel Diaz launched his first homer of the season, a two-run shot off Mocs' starter Matt Martin, scoring Deyvid Silva who had walked. | Barry 2, FSC 0
  • T3 - Chris Cabrera ripped a double to drive in Andrew Rapoza and Freddie Matos. | Barry 4, FSC 0
  • T4 - Diaz led off with a single and Omar Baldo followed with a walk. JC Garcia was hit by a pitch by Martin to load the bases. Matos poked a single through the left side to score Diaz and Baldo. Garcia came in on a long single to right by Rapoza. | Barry 7, FSC 0
  • T9 - Rapoza drove in Branden Abreu with a single into the gap. | Barry 8, FSC 0

  • T1 - The Bucs made a statement in the top of the first of the finale. Garcia led off with a homer to left. Matos and Cabrera sandwiched walks around a single by Rapoza to load the bases. Reuben Pino beat out an infield single to score Matos. Paul Salata pulled a base hit through the right side of the infield to score two more and Pino jogged hom ona single by Silva. | Barry 5, FSC 0

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Myles Gayman (1-1) worked seven shutout innings for the win in game one. He scattered three hits and three walks and struck out five.
  • Alejandro Cabrera (2-1) went eight innings in the nightcap for the win. He allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and struck out eight.
  • Martin (0-1) took the loss in game one for the Mocs. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on five hits and two walks and struck out three.
  • Carson King (2-1) took the loss in game two. In six innings, she surrendered seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and four walks. He managed three strikeouts.
  • The Bucs had played 94 previous games against the Mocs, dating back to 1985 and never posted a sweep. Barry did win four straight in the series in 2011 and 2012, taking the last two in 2011 and the first two in 2012.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs have their SSC home opener next weekend, as they host the 23rd-ranked Saint Leo Lions.
