Basketball Travels To Lakeland For Final Road Conference Game

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers travel to Lakeland, Fla., to take on the Florida Southern Moccasins in a key pair of Sunshine State Conference basketball games on Saturday, Feb. 23. The women tip at 5:30 pm, followed by the men at 7:30 pm.

Women's Basketball - Saturday, Feb. 23; 5:30 pm; Jenkins Fieldhouse

The Barry women (9-16, 6-11 SSC) are coming off a 69-55 loss at Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday. The Bucs trailed by just three with just under five minutes to play, but scored only one point the rest of the way. Nichel Tampa led the Bucs with 10 points, as the Bucs hit just 21-of-74 from the field. 

Tampa, Ida Andersson and Swindells all average double figures for the Bucs. Tampa lead the way with 14.9 points per game. She adds 5.0 assists, 3.6 assists and 3.0 steals per game. Andersson chips in 13.7 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds. Swindells clocks in at 10.4 points and  1.7 assists.

The Mocs (22-3, 15-2 SSC) won 69-56 at Eckerd on Wednesday.  Anja Fuchs-Robetin (14), Camille Giardina (24), and Julia Jenike (11) combined for 49 points. 

Giardina leads the Mocs and the conference at 19.3 points per game. Fuchs-Robetin chips in 17.8 points and 6.5 rebounds.

GAME NOTES:

  • The moccasins lead 50-17 in the all-time series, including 27-4 in Jenkins.
  • Thanks to a 37-point third quarter, the Mocs won the earlier meeting in Miami Shores 101-72. Giardina had 30 points, 25 of them in the second half, Fuchs-Robetin added 18 and Mackenzie Steele had 17 off the bench. Tampa led Barry with 22 points, while Andersson had 17 and Swindells added 14.

Men's Basketball - Saturday, Feb. 23; 7:30 pm; Jenkins Fieldhouse

The Buccaneer men (14-10, 9-8 SSC) fell 80-76 to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Wednesday. Marcelo Perez had a career-high 18 points off the bench. Daniel Mortensen had 17 points, Tylan Birts 16 and Evan Walshe added 11. 

Mortensen, who is two points away from 1,000 for his career, leads the team with 13.8 points per game. Birts averages 12.5 points and both he and Mortensen average 5.7 rebounds per game.

The Mocs (20-5, 13-4 SSC) beat Eckerd on the road 91-80 on Wednesday. Jonathan Lawton led six Mocs in double figures with 24 points. Slinky Jones had 19 points and Jack Rauch added 17. Brett Hanson had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Ben Marello also had 10 points. 

Lawton leads the Mocs and the SSC at 23.0 points per game. Hanson had 17.0, Jones 11.2 and Rauch 10 points per game.

  • The Mocs won the earlier meeting 79-65 in Miami Shores. Daniel Mortensen led the Bucs with 17 points and seven rebounds. Leandro Allende chipped in 10 points off the bench. Jonathan Lawton, who went 10-of-10 from the line, scored 25 points as the top Moc. EJ Dambreville was one of four other players in double figures with 17 points off the bench.
