Women's Basketball Drops Road Game At Eckerd

Fourth quarter comeback falls just short

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers rallied in the fourth quarter, but fell short to the Eckerd Tritons 70-64 in the McArthur Center on Saturday in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Tritons broke open the game with a 10-0 run in the first quarter. Leading 9-6, Eckerd scored the next 10 points, capped by a Brooke Juday three-pointer with 3:20 left in the period. The Tritons carried a 12-point lead into the first break. | Eckerd 22, Barry 10
  • 2Q - In the second period, the Tritons pushed the lead to 16, 32-16, on a basket by Zoe Richards with 4:37 left. Barry closed the period, though, on a 9-3 run that left the Tritons with a 10-point advantage at the intermission. | Eckerd 35, Barry 25
  • 3Q - The Bucs came out strong to start the third quarter, opening with an 11-5 run that cut the Triton lead to just four points, 40-36 on a Nichel Tampa three-point play just before the media timeout. But the Tritons regrouped during the break and pushed the lead back to double figures with a 10-2 run of their own and carried a 13-point lead into the final frame. | Eckerd 54, Barry 41
  • 4Q - The Bucs made it tight down the stretch. Trailing 65-53 with 4:47 to play, the Bucs mustered a 9-1 run, capped by a three-point play from Nerea Baena, that cut the lead to just three points with just under a minute to play. But Abby Whiteye drained a three-pointer on the Tritons' next possession and Mikayla Kuehne sealed the game with a pair from the line with 0:17 seconds left.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Tampa led the Bucs with 17 points, while posts Baena and Emma Hergot added 14 and 12 points respectively.
  • Whiteye led four Tritons in double figures with 18 points. Juday had 15 off the bench. Eneritz Larranaga had 13 and Kuehne added 11.
  • The Tritons won the battle on the boards 40-29 and out-shot the Bucs 11-4 from three-point range.
  • The Bucs forced 27 turnovers, but hit just.35.6 percent from the floor.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs are off next week for exams, but return to the court on Dec. 16, hosting the Florida Tech Panthers at 5:30 pm on Cesar Odio Court.
