Men's Basketball Drops First Loss On Arch-Rival Knights

Dean and Birts each scored 17 in the win

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers dropped a 93-90 loss on the previously unbeaten Lynn Knights on Wednesday night in the de Hoernle Center in Sunshine State Conference men's basketball action.

SUMMARY:

  • The Bucs jumped quickly out of the gate, but led just 11-10 at the first media timeout. But back-to-back three-pointers by David Moya gave Barry a seven-point lead. They pushed the lead to double-figures, 34-22, on a triple by Jake Kakar with 7:09 left in the half.  
  • Barry pushed the lead to 16 on a Moya layup with 1:50 in the period. After an exchange of baskets, Brandon Bornelus dropped a buzz-beater to make the halftime score 48-35 in favor of the Bucs.
  • The Knights out-scored the Bucs 33-24 in the first 10 minutes of the half, tying the game at 68-68 on a three-pointer by Darius Moore at 10:36.
  • Another triple from Moore gave Lynn its first lead, 71-70, and the Knights built an eight-point lead, 79-71, on a pair of free throws by Christian Peevy with 7:50 to play.
  • The Bucs responded with a 13-4 run to take an 84-83 lead on a three-pointer by Evan Walshe with just under four minutes left. It was a nip-and-tuck affair down the stretch with a two lead changes and four ties.
  • After the Bucs took an 88-86 lead on a layup by Tylan Birts, the team exchanged baskets to tie 90-90 with 0:42 seconds left on a jumper by Peevy.
  • Both teams missed on their next possessions, with Birts grabbing the rebound after a miss by Peevy. He keyed the ball out to Toru Dean who finished off the fast break with a layup with 0:03 seconds left and was fouled by Bornelus, sinking the free throw for a three-point play and sealing the game for the Bucs.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Six Buccaneers scored in double figures, as Barry's balanced attack rolled to a season-high 93 points.
  • Birts and Dean each had 17 points to pace the squad, with all 17 of Dean's coming in the second half.
  • Moya added a season-high 16 points, Evan Walshe had 14, Johannes Dolven added 12 and Kakar had 10.
  • Dolven added a game-high nine rebounds, while Birts had eight.
  • The Bucs forced five more turnovers and grabbed three more rebounds, resulting in nine more shots from the field, crucial in a tight game.
  • Bornelus led Lynn with 26 points, while Moore added 23. Peevy had 16 and Brandon Ellis chipped in 14.
  • Head coach Butch Estes is now 12-2 against the Knights at Barry.
