Basketball Hits The Road To Orlando To Face Tars

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers travel up to Winter Park, Fla., to take on the Rollins Tars in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 5. The women tip at 2:00 pm, followed by the men at 4:00 pm.

Women's Basketball - Saturday, Jan 5; 2:00 pm; Warden Arena

The Buccaneer women (4-8, 2-3 SSC) are coming off a 70-61 loss at Embry-Riddle on Wednesday. Harriet Swindells came off the bench for 13 points to lead the team in scoring for the third straight game. Ida Andersson and Nichel Tampa each chipped in 12 points. 

Tampa and Andersson continue to be the one-two punch for the Bucs. Tampa leads the team at 14.1 points and 3.8 assists per game and is second with 5.8 rebounds. Andersson is second at 14.0 points and third at 1.8 assist and leads the team with 7.7 rebounds. Swindells adds 10.7 points off the bench on 42.6 shooting from three-point range. 

The Tars (7-4, 4-1 SSC) saw their five-game winning streak snapped by Nova Southeastern on Wednesday. Yari Martinez-Toro led the Tars with 19 points while Carly McLendon tallied 13 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Jaylyn Harrison netted 10 off the bench to go along with five assists.  

Senior forward McLendon is the only Tar in double figures at 10.6 points per game and leads the team at 8.2 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Martinez-Toro chips in 9.7 points and leads the team at 3.0 assists per game. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Rollins leads 47-22, though the Bucs have won five of the last seven.
  • Last season, Barry took both meetings for the second time in three years. The Bucs won 78-60 in Miami Shores and 70-62 in Winter Park.

Men's Basketball - Saturday, Jan 5; ; 4:00 pm; Warden Arena

The Barry men (9-3, 4-1 SSC) have won back-to-back games coming out of the Christmas break. The handled the Embry-Riddle Eagles with ease on Wednesday, 96-81, on the road at the ICI Center. Evan Walshe led four Buccaneers in double figures with a season-high 20 points. Isaiah Hobbs also had a season-high with 17, while Daniel Mortensen and Milon Sheffield each had 16.

Mortensen continues to pace the team with 14.3 points per game. Tylan Birts chips in 10.4 points on 61.1 percent shooting and leads the team with 5.6 rebounds. Walshe has his average up to 10.0 points per game after Wednesday's outing.

The Tars (8-5, 2-3 SSC), despite hold the top scoring offense in the nation to the second lowest total of the season, lost to the fifth-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks on Wednesday. Senior Eric Castaneda led the Tars with 13 point and five steals while junior guard Connor Mckim netted 11.  

Junior guar Jakobi Bonner leads the team with 15.2 points per game, followed by Mckim with 13.8 and freshman guard Hutton Yenor with 10.4 points per game. Junior swingman Trevor Recio leads the team with 5.0 rebounds per game. McKim's 2.6 assists per game pace the team.
