Women's Basketball Escapes Lions' Den With Win

Bucs post huge road conference win

ST. LEO, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers built a big lead and held on for a 60-55 road win in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action from the Bowman Center on Saturday.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - Saint Leo hopped out to an 11-4 lead in the five minutes, going up 11-4 on a layup by Asia Royster with 4:24 to play. But Barry closed the frame on a 13-3 run behind five points from Emma Hergot. | Barry 17, Saint Leo 14
  • 2Q - The Bucs continued the run in the second quarter, as the defense clamped down on the Lions, holding them to just 3-of-13 shooting in the period. Ida Andersson had a layup at the buzzer to give Barry their biggest lead of the game, 35-21 at the intermission. | Barry 35, Saint Leo 21
  • 3Q - The Lions closed the game in the first part of the third quarter. Casey Wortley hit three free throws with 5:17 remaining to make it 38-32 Bucs. Barry responded with an 8-4 run of their own to push the lead back to double figures, 46-36, on a pair from the stripe by Harriet Swindells with 1:48 to play. But Olivia Lough scored six points in the last minute to pull SLU back to within four. | Barry 46, Saint Leo 42
  • 4Q - Lough continued her run, scoring the first three points of the fourth quarter for a 9-0 run. Gina Bierley's three-pointer with 7:58 to play, gave the Lions their first lead since the 3:40 mark of the first quarter. Another three-pointer by Delaney Bernard gave the Lions a 53-50 lead with 6:27 to play. Barry struggled from the field down the stretch, hitting just two of their last 12 shots. But Saint Leo was even worse, going 1-for-9 in the final minutes and Barry hit 6-of-10 from the free throw line to ice the game. | Barry 60, Saint Leo 55

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Richardson led the Bucs with 17 points, while Nichel Tampa added 13 and Andersson had 10.
  • Tampa also had five steals as the Bucs forced the Lions into 23 turnovers.
  • Lough led the Lions with 12 points. Wortley added 11 and Alani Gallagher had 10.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs travel over the the de Hoernle Center to face the Lynn Fighting Knights on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
