Men's Hoops Falls to PBA 67-63

Tylan Birts recorded his first career double-double against the Sailfish.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Despite holding Palm Beach Atlantic (7-9, 3-5 SSC) to 32 percent shooting, the Buccaneers (10-5, 5-3 SSC) dropped just their second home game of the season 67-63 inside the Health & Sports Center on Wednesday night. Tylan Birts was impressive in the loss for the Bucs, recording his first career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Birts also led the way defensively for Barry with four blocks and four steals, both are a season-high.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final:  PBA 67, Barry 63
Records: Barry 10-5, 5-3 SSC, PBA 7-9, 3-5 SSC
All-Time Series: Barry leads 28-9

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"The turnovers early were just critical," Buccaneer head coach Butch Estes said. Barry went into the half with 15 turnovers, finishing with 21 for the game. "There was poor execution on our part. We have got to learn to start [games] a little quicker. We also have to learn [how to finish], we had this game with four or five minutes left. We just weren't able to finish," Estes added.

The Buccaneers finished the game with four free throw attempts to PBA's 23. "That's a major problem," Estes said. "We don't have the inside threat. We're trying to drive the ball, we are attacking the basket and we're just not getting the calls. So we're going to look at the tape and see how we can improve."

SUMMARY:

  • At the first media timeout, the Buccaneers were perfect from the field (2-for-2), but had already committed more turnovers (6) than baskets.
  • The Buccaneer offense seemed to start clicking at the 6:57 mark in the first half when they went on a 9-0 run to go ahead 26-20. PBA finished the half on a 9-3 run and both teams went into their respective locker rooms with the score tied 29 all.
  • A fast break dunk by Birts with five minutes to go in the game gave the Bucs their largest lead of the game, 56-48. However, the Sailfish would finish the game on a 19-7 run and put the game out of reach.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The four free throw attempts are a season-low for the Buccaneers.
  • Barry tied a season-high with 21 turnovers.
  • The Buccaneer bench outscored the Sailfish 29-11.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs are on the road for two games, with the first game coming against Saint Leo (7-9, 4-4 SSC) on Saturday, January 19th. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
