Women's Soccer Levels Hilltoppers

Bucs post three first-half goals

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers leveled the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 3-0 to open the 2018 women's soccer season at Buccaneer Field on Thursday night.

SUMMARY:

  • 7:40 - Christy Grimshaw got the scoring rolling in the 8th minute. Keeper Annabel Sweeney fell down, making a save on Molly Sharpe's shot and Grimshaw was there to score on the empty net.
  • 19:30 - In the 20th minute, the Bucs sent the ball down to the baseline. Sweeney came out of the box, but could not get to the ball before Grimshaw. Grimshaw passed back to Gabby Sanon who crossed the ball to Sharpe at eight yards. Sharpe rifled the ball into the empty net.
  • 38:10 - Jade Adams lined up a free kick in the 39th minute and dropped a dime in the box. Grimshaw shouldered the ball down and freshman Grace Marks knocked it in.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Maddie Hart-Pomerantz picked up the win, making two saves in the first half. 
  • Melanie Ziegner played the second half, making one save and getting help from Adams and Sophia Sharos who swept balls off the line.
  • Sweeney made five saves, but allowed the three first-half goals.
  • Barry led 20-9 in shots, including 8-5 on goal. 
  • The last time Barry scored three goals in the first half came in a 4-1 win over Tampa on Oct. 7, 2017.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry faces the Purple Knights of St. Michael's on Friday at 6:00 pm.
