Bucs improve to 6-0 on the season

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The second-ranked Barry Buccaneers' superior singles lineup carried them to a 5-3 win over the fifth-ranked Valdosta State Blazers at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga., on Sunday in men's tennis action.

DOUBLES:

The Blazers took two of the three doubles.

  • VSU's Fernando Rivas and Francisco Yim Kim took the early lead with an 8-4 win over Flavio Matteoli and Blake Bayldon at No. 2 doubles.
  • The Blazer duo of Jordi Mas and Florian Simbozel handed an 8-6 loss to Pierre Montrieul and Carlos Gomez at No. 1 doubles.
  • But Vivien Versier and Fernando Tous salvaged a point for the Bucs heading into singles with an 8-6 win over Axel Holm and Davis Stewart at the bottom flight.

SINGLES:

  • Montrieul continued to roll in singles, knocking off 14th-ranked Mas in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to even the match
  • Daniel Ventura put the Bucs up with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Rives at No. 3 singles.
  • Xavier Pineda knotted it back up at 3-3 with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Matteoli at No. 5.
  • Eighth-ranked Gomez needed three sets again, but prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 over Simbozel at No. 2.
  • Versier came through big again for the Bucs with a third set, tie-break win over 24th-ranked Yim Kim 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (3)
  • Filip Zupancic and Axel Holm were knotted 3-6, 7-6 (4), 4-4 at No. 6 when the match was halted.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Ventura, the last unbeaten Buccaneer in singles play this season, improved to 5-0. 
  • Versier came through with two huge points.
  • Montrieul is 4-0 against ranked foes this season.
  • The Bucs won at teh top four slots in the singles order.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs take on the eighth-ranked Bearcats of Lander University on Monday.
