No. 1 Men's Tennis Bounces Back to Bounce Eckerd

Barry returns home Wednesday vs. No. 24 PBA

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Barry made good on its redemption chance Sunday, beating Eckerd, 8-1, in a Sunshine State Conference men's tennis match at Fred Bullard Courts.

Coming off a stinging loss the day before, the No. 1-ranked Buccaneers rebounded in a big way at the conclusion of a three-match weekend road trip.

In the process, a couple Bucs picked up their first wins of the season, giving every eligible player on the roster at least one singles victory and two doubles wins this year.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP

DOUBLES:

  • Matias Larregina and Martin Gutierrez won their first doubles match together, beating Robert Vazquez and Alejandro Vuconovic, 8-0, at No. 3 pairs to put Barry on top, 1-0.
  • Forty-eighth-ranked Filip Zupancic and Fernando Tous recorded another doubles shutout, beating Alasdair Knox and Connor Masella, 8-0, at the No. 1 spot. That made it 2-0 Bucs.
  • The Tritons cut it to 2-1 when Matt Spasic and Will Stone defeated Blake Bayldon and Flavio Matteoli, 8-3, at No. 2.

SINGLES:

  • Matteoli ran off a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles over Vazquez to give the Buccaneers a 3-1 lead.
  • Gutierrez beat Masella, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 to move Barry within a point of securing the team's 13th victory.
  • Vivien Versier clinched it with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stone at No. 2.
  • Tous recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win over Vuconovic at No. 6 singles. 
  • Zupancic notched a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Spasic at the No. 3 position to extend the lead to 7-1.
  • Larregina finished off the Tritons, withstanding Knox, 6-2, 6-4, at the top spot. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Tous and Zupancic both won their first singles matches of the season.
  • It was Zupancic's first career college singles victory.
  • Larregina won for the first time at No. 1 singles.
  • Barry is 12-3 at the No. 3 doubles position this year.
  • The Bucs are 2-0 following a loss this season.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will host No. 24 Palm Beach Atlantic at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
