MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's men's basketball team will play at Saint Leo 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. It is the second straight weekend night road game for the Buccaneers.
The Bucs (14-6, 10-5 Sunshine State Conference) moved back on top of the league standings Wednesday after their win over Embry-Riddle at home. Saint Leo (12-15, 8-8) had a three-game win streak snapped Wednesday in a loss to Nova Southeastern.
Saint Leo is raising awareness for autism as part of the game.
Barry is 4-4 on the road this season. Saint Leo is 6-5 at home.
The Buccaneers had a season-best 31 assists and matched a season-low five turnovers Wednesday. Barry shot 50 percent from the field for the first time in seven games.
"It's all about us," Bucs assistant coach
Justin Furr said. "As long as we handle our business and take care of the games we're supposed to take care of, we'll be in good shape. Hopefully it can prepare us for a postseason run this year."
Barry beat Saint Leo, 79-63, in the first meeting this year. The 63 points are the second lowest the Bucs have given up this season. Only one starter scored in double figures in that win for Barry -- a 32-point effort by
Elvar Fridriksson.
Johannes Dolven had 12 points against the Lions in that Jan. 3 game. Saint Leo's Tyreece Brice scored 17 against the Bucs in that one, while DeAndre King had 14, and Isaiah Hill 11.
But there is no pattern in the Sunshine State Conference. Every team is taking turns knocking each other off.
"This is a league, we're like little Pac Man ... we're just eating each other up," Barry head coach
Butch Estes said. "That's kind of hurting us nationally, but it is a great league. I have as much respect for Rollins and Eckerd as I do for whoever's not doing well. It makes no difference, you better be ready to play."
Barry's next home game is Saturday, Feb. 17 versus rival Nova Southeastern on
ESPN3.
