Baseball Splits With Moccasins

Mocs win streak snapped

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University baseball team split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with the fourth-ranked Moccasins of Florida Southern Saturday at Feinbloom Field. The Bucs won the first game 18-7 to snap the Mocs 11-game winning streak, but dropped the rubber game 19-7.

Game 1

  • B2: Barry grabbed the early lead. Garrett Thompson knocked in Richie Sobalvarro with a single to center. | Barry 1, FSC 0
  • T4: Jacob Teter ripped a two-run homer to right to put the Mocs on top. | FSC 2, Barry 1
  • B4: The Bucs pushed across five runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Paul Salata and Sobalvarro singled with one out and Ryan Baldwin drew a walk to load the bases. Thompson singled in Salata to tie the game. Jojo Alvarez reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Sobalvarro and Baldwin scored on a error by the Mocs' Dylan Costa.   • B5: The Bucs put up five more runs in fifth.  Justin Lamazares led off with a triple to straight away center. Salata followed with his second homer of the season. Sobalvarro, Baldwin and Thompson had three straight singles to plate another run. Alvarez dropped down a perfect bunt single to re-load the bases. Alexis Monge-Rodriguez had a sacrifice fly to score Baldwin. Rapoza was hit by a pitch to load them up again and Lamazares drew a walk to force in Thompson. | Barry 11, FSC 2

  • B6: The Bucs big inning came in the sixth as they scored seven runs on six hits. Sobalvarro singled and Baldwin reached on an error. Thompson came up with the scoring knock to drive in Sobalvarro and Monge-Rodriguez singled to load the bases. Rapoza forced in a run with a walk and Jonathan Quintana had a two-run double. NOTEWORTHY:

  • Mike Miles (2-0) earned the win in game one. In five innings of work, he allowed four runs on six hits and three walks and struck out three. 
  • Armando Gonzalez earned an improbable four inning save. He allowed three runs on three hits and a walk and struck out three of his own.
  • Matt Martin (1-1) took the loss, the first of the season for the Mocs. In 3.0 innings of relief of Trevor Castell, who was injured in the first inning covering first, Martin allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk.
  • In game two, Hernandez was tagged with the loss. He gave up four runs on four hits and two walks in two innings.
  • JJ Niekro (3-0) improved to 3-0 on the season. He worked five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk.  

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry heads to St. Leo, Fla., on March 2 and 3 to take on the Saint Leo Lions at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
