Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Blazers

Bucs drop game one, but rally for a win in the night cap

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The Barry Buccaneers split a baseball doubleheader with the Valdosta State Blazers on Saturday at Billy Grant Field. VSU won the opener 9-6, while Barry came back to take the nightcap 5-1.

SUMMARY (Game one):

  • B-2nd -- Ross Goforth hit a solo homer to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead | VSU 1, Barry 0
  • T-4th -- Jonathan Quintana led off with a double and scored on a ground out by Ryan Baldwin to knot the game. | Barry 1, VSU 1
  • T-5th -- The Bucs scored five runs to take the lead. They loaded the bases with no outs. Justin Lamazares drove in Reuben Pino with a sacrifice fly. Quintana walked to load them up again. Richie Sobalvarro drew a walk to force in Joel Alvarez. Arrison Perez came home on a ground out by Baldwin. Andrew Rapoza drove in two runs with a double to left-center. | Barry 6, VSU 1
  • B- 5th -- Elias Macias hit a three-run homer to trim the lead. | Barry 6, VSU 4
  • B-7th -- The Blazers took the lead with a five-run seventh. Dalton Murray hit a two-run homer to tie the game. Then, after loading the bases, the Blazers got a pair of runs on hit batsmen. | VSU 9, Barry 6

SUMMARY (Game two):

  • T-4th -- Paul Salata scored on an infield single by Perez and Lamazares belted a three-run homer, his first of the season. | Barry 4, VSU 0
  • B-4th -- Andrew Williamson had an RBI double to score Murray. | BArry 4, VSU 1
  • T-6th -- Pino scored on a sac fly by Perez. | Barry 5, VSU 1

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Angel Almonte (0-1) was tagged with the loss in game one. He allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in 2.1 innings, striking out three. 
  • Pablo Arevalo (1-0) earned the win in relief in game two. He worked three scoreless innings in relief of Isreal Cordero, allowing just one hit and striking out two. 
  • Matt Weidenbach (1-0) got the win in the first game for the Blazers. He worked a scoreless inning on one hit. Logan Elliot got the save. Sean Gabel (1-1) took the loss in game two, surrendering four unearned runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. 
  • Rapoza led the Bucs at the plate, going 4-for-7 with two doubles and two RBI. Lamazares was 3-for-8 with a double, a homer and four RBI.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs and Blazers play a rubber game on Sunday starting at noon.
