Men's Tennis Wins Season Opener at Flagler

No. 2 Barry stifles No. 11 Saints

SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Barry University's men's tennis team opened the season with a 7-2 win at Flagler Saturday.

The No. 2 Buccaneers and No. 11 Saints battled through three tough doubles matches before Barry came away with a 2-1 lead. The Bucs carried the momentum into singles play to clinch the match.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry's Fernando Tous and Flavio Matteoli secured the first point for the Bucs when they beat Luca Bolla and Rasmus Jonsson, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.
  • The Bucs went up 2-0 when Vivien Versier and Blake Bayldon pulled out an 8-6 win over Felipe Carvalho and Daniel Arrien at No. 2 pairs.
  • Flagler picked up a point at the top doubles position when Lukas Storck and Konstantin Dustmann rallied to beat Barry's Carlos Gomez and Pierre Montrieul, 9-8 (7-5). The Bucs pair led 5-2, but the Saints broke back to pull within 5-4. Barry could not hold serve the rest of the match before it went to a tiebreaker. The Saints pulled through to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the match.
  • Montrieul defeated No. 38-ranked Storck, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), at No. 1 singles. Eighth-ranked Gomez fell to Bolla, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2. Daniel Ventura coasted to a 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.
  • Versier was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Dustmann at No. 4 singles. Bayldon defeated Hermann Gertmann, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 5 spot. Matteoli beat Arrien, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Flagler is coached by former Buccaneer assistant Thomas Hipp.
  • Montrieul picked up his fourth win over a nationally-ranked opponent in his two years at Barry.
  • Bayldon was competing in his first collegiate match.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will play at No. 10 Embry-Riddle 11 a.m. Sunday.
