No. 2 Men's Tennis Gets By No. 10 Embry-Riddle

Buccaneers win SSC opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Barry University's No. 2-ranked men's tennis team won its first Sunshine State Conference match Sunday, beating No. 10 Embry-Riddle, 6-3.

The Buccaneers took a 2-1 lead for the second straight day after doubles before closing it out in singles play.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry's Fernando Tous and Flavio Matteoli used good energy to put away Lucas Lesoeur and Deepak Vishavkarma, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
  • Vivien Versier and Blake Bayldon gave the Bucs a 2-0 lead when they beat Juan Ortiz Couder and Lucas Bos, 8-4, at No. 2 pairs.
  • The Eagles won the No. 1 doubles point as Rodolfo Arreygue and Andres Donayre beat Carlos Gomez and Pierre Montrieul, 8-5.
  • Matteoli defeated Lesoeur, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, at No. 6 singles. 
  • Versier beat Arreygue, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. 
  • Embry-Riddle picked up two points when Bos beat Filip Zupancic, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5, and Couder defeated Montrieul, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1. That pulled the Eagles within 4-3.
  • Gomez clinched the win for the Bucs with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Vishavkarma at No. 2 singles. Daniel Ventura wrapped it up with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Donayre at No. 3.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • This was the first official conference match versus Embry-Riddle as the Eagles became full members this season.
  • Barry has dropped the No. 1 doubles point in both of the first two matches.
  • Matteoli and Versier both won four matches in the opening weekend.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will host St. Thomas Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. in the home opener.
