Women's Basketball Wins SSC Home Opener Over Tritons

Ida Andersson's trey is the game-winner

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry knocked off #25 Eckerd 64-63 on a three-pointer by Ida Andersson with four seconds left at Cesar Odio Court in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

SUMMARY:

  • !Q - The game swung back and forth early. But after Barry took an 8-7 lead with 5:20 left in the period, the Tritons rolled off a 9-2 run to go up 16-10 on a three-pointer by Abby Whiteye. With the Bucs trying for a last shot, the Tritons forced a turnover and Eneritz Larranaga scored in transition to hold that six-point lead. | Eckerd 18, Barry 12
  • 2Q - The Bucs battled back to tie the game 22-22 on a jumper by Nichel Tampa with 5:39 left in the half. It remain tied at 26-26 on a Emma Hergot turnaround with 2:31, but the Tritons scored nine of the next 15 points to maintain their six-point lead at the half. | Eckerd 35, Barry 29
  • 3Q - Coming out of the break, the Bucs started the period with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to one, 37-36. Barry finally regained the lead for the first time since 8-7 in the first quarter on a jumper in the lane by Tampa with 3:44 left in the period. After back-to-back fast break baskets from Harriet Swindells and Tampa, Barry led 46-42. Chelsea Johnson hit her own fast break bucket at the buzzer to trim the lead to two.   • 4Q - The Tritons started off the final frame with a pair of three-pointers by Octavia Loll and Mikayla Kuehne to go back up bby four. Barry responded with a 8-0 run, fueled by two transition triples by Ashleigh Pink to regain a four-point lead, 54-50, with 5:04 to play. Once again, however, the Tritons pushed out to a three-point lead on a three-point play by Loll. After a couple baskets by Tampa, Andersson finally gave the Bucs a lead, 61-59, on a three-pointer with 0:51 seconds left. Johnson answered back for Eckerd on their next possession. Leading 62-61, the Tritons forced a one-and-out by the Bucs, but Loll was only able to hit one of two free throws, leaving the window open for the Bucs. Andersson got the inbound pass and stepped back for another three-pointer and Eckerd was unable to get a good look in the last four seconds as Barry held on for the win. | Barry 64, Eckerd 63 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Bucs shot 53 percent from the field (15-of-28) in the second half, after hitting just 37 percent in the first half.
  • Barry did not commit a foul in the first half.
  • Both teams had 34 points in the paint, but Barry out-scored the Tritons 14-4 in transition.
  • Tampa led the Bucs with 19 points, while Andersson added 12. Tampa also grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to lead the team.
  • Johnson led Eckerd with 19 points. Loll added 12 and Whiteye had 10.

Barry will play at the Cruzin' Classic Dec. 17-18, facing #4 West Texas A&M and Truman at the Fort Lauderdale Civic Center.
