Men's Soccer Wins South Region Championship

BarryU advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals 4-2 in penalty kicks over Lynn

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. -- The Barry men's soccer team used all 110 minutes of regulation and overtime plus a penalty kick shootout to seal the season sweep of the Lynn Fighting Knights and capture the NCAA Regional crown to advance to the next round of the tournament. Both teams entered the shootout scoreless and Barry came out victorious by a 4-2 margin with four out of the five kickers converting for the Bucs.

SUMMARY:

  • 5:32 - Francisco Greco nearly snuck one in when he almost headed in a long lob pass from defender Lorenzo Cerrai.
  • 16:23 - Aday Gonzalez fired in a fast ball cross that found the head of Greco again but the shot ended up deflecting just wide right of the goal.
  • 44:14 - Marco Sordi made his first save of the night when he made a diving catch on a shot from Lynn's Max Herbert.
  • 56:04 - Marco Sordi made another clutch play, punching out a corner kick before Herbert was able to knock a spectacular ball into the net. Fortunately for the Bucs, the Lynn forward was called offsides on the play.
  • 67:05 - Lucas Russo makes a nice play on the defensive end and then proceeds to run coast to coast for a solid shot on goal that was saved by Lynn's keeper Roberto Bazzichetto.
  • 81:06 - Luca De Biase records back-to-back shots with the first being saved by Bazzichetto and the second going just wide right of the post.
  • PKs - Stephen Kosmala, Lucas Russo, Greco, and Martin Lozano all converted their kicks for the Bucs while Sordi made a clutch save on a shot by Rodrigo Fernandez in the shootout that would go on to finish the Knights off.
NOTEWORTHY:
  • Barry will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since 2000.
  • The shooting statistics were fairly even with both teams recording 15 shots though Barry recorded more shots on goal with eight compared to Lynn's five.
  • The game-clinching save was Marco Sordi's fourth penalty save of the season.

The Bucs will now take on the Lander Bobcats in a showdown in the NCAA Quarterfinals at Young Harris, Ga. on Nov. 18 at 1:00 pm.
