Men's Hoops Opens Season with 69-57 Win Over Clark Atlanta

Mortensen led all scorers with 21 points on 6/11 shooting

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Buccaneer head coach Butch Estes admits that he still has to figure out what mixture of players will work best during different points of a game for his team this season. However, on Saturday afternoon his team opened the 2018-2019 season with a 69-57 win over Clark Atlanta at home.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Barry 69, Clark Atlanta 57.
First ever meeting between both programs.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"I've got to settle in on who I put [in] and in what spot," Estes said. "A couple of our more experienced guys didn't have a great game today and that was a surprise, so we had to go to the bench. I have to get a more normal rotation. In essence, this could really be our seventh game when you take the preseason in account. The freshman still have a little bit to learn, but they're going to be great with time."

SUMMARY:

  • Daniel Mortensen started the game with back-to-back threes for the Buccaneers, who finished the first half shooting 50 percent from the field while holding Clark Atlanta to 38.5 percent.
  • Barry led by as many as nine in the first half, but the Panthers would keep the Bucs at an arms distance until the start of the second half when the Bucs went almost seven minutes without a basket. CAU would take their first lead of the game 40-37 at the 13:39 mark.
  • Back-to-back threes by Mortensen gave Barry the lead again with 10:03 remaining in the game. Strong showings in the second half by Mortensen (12 points) and Isaiah Hobbs (nine points) allowed Barry to pull away from the Panthers and come away with the win.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Mortensen led all scorers with 21 points on 6/11 shooting - all from three point land. He was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.
  • Hobbs sparked the Barry comeback after CAU took the lead in the second half with an electric denial of a driving Panther player. He finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
  • Senior Marko Tomic was in foul trouble throughout the game and was never able to get in a rhythm.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs return to the court tomorrow, Sunday, November 11 when they face Coastal Georgia at home, tip-off is set for 4:00 pm.
