Bucs Fall to Sailfish in Five Sets

The Buccaneers loss snapped a nine-game winning streak

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The No. 24-ranked Barry Buccaneers (23-3, 12-3 SSC) dropped a five set heart-breaker to No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic (23-3, 12-3 SSC) at home on Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers' loss snapped a nine-game winning streak and gives PBA the season-series win. Barry dropped the match 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 24-26, 11-15.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Final: No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic 3. No. 24 Barry 2
Records: No. 24 Barry (23-3, 12-3 SSC), No. 17 PBA (23-3, 12-3 SSC)
All-Time Series: Barry is 12-17 against PBA

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"They served well", Buccaneer head coach Steve Hendricks said. I think we were aced nine times and that hasn't happened all year. We control the ball much better than that, so credit them on their serving. We still fought though, and still have five more matches, so we're going to be alright. "

The Buccaneers also struggled with their own serves, totaling 12 service errors. "Our service errors were because we were being aggressive. We missed by a few inches, some of our short serves got the top of the tape and didn't go over.

Junior Megi Buvinic set a season-high in kills with 25 against PBA and coach Hendricks is never amazed with what she can do on the court. "That kid is really good," Hendricks said. "She makes some phenomenal defensive plays. She has one of the best line shots that I've ever seen. She's fantastic."

SUMMARY:

  • 1st set | W 25-21 | The Bucs looked to be running away with the set after taking a 22-12 lead. Then, PBA went on a 9-3 run to make things close.
  • 2nd set | L 22-25 | Barry's four service errors and .152 attack percentage were too much to overcome against the Sailfish.
  • 3rd set | W 25-19 | Buccaneers responded with a much better attack percentage (.306) led by Buvinic and Anastasiia Samokhvalova who each had five kills, respectively.
  • 4th set | L 24-26 | Both teams went toe-to-toe before the set was decided on a close call after an attack-attempt by Buvinic. The official ruled that the ball was not deflected at the net after going out-of-bounds.
  • 5th set | L 11-15 | PBA appeared to have completely ran away with the set with a 14-6 lead. Barry stormed back, but ultimately came up short.
