Basketball Ends Home Stand Against Mocs

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Buccaneers close out a three-game home stand as they host the Florida Southern Moccasins on Wednesday, Jan. 10 on Cesar Odio Court. The women tip off at 5:30 pm, while the men follow at 7:30 pm.

Women's Basketball - Wednesday, Jan. 10, 5:30 pm, Health & Sports Center

Barry is 12-3, 5-2 in the SSC after beating Saint Leo (72-54) and Florida Tech (72-70) last week. They are tied with Eckerd (#2 in the region) and Florida Southern for first place in the SSC. The Bucs are tied for third in the D2SIDA Women's Basketball South Region Poll.

Kiara Palmer, who leads the Bucs in scoring (15.8), rebounding (10.8), shooting (55.6) and blocked shots (2.9) is sixth in the conference in scoring, first in rebounding, third in shooting and second in blocks. The 6-0 senior has posted seven double-doubles this season. Barbara Cousiño is chipping in 14.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and a team-high 2.8 assists. She leads the conference in free throw shooting at 89.8 percent. Ida Andersson is third in scoring (10.1) and second in rebounding (5.5). 

The Mocs (10-3, 5-2 SSC), winners of their last three in a row, knocked off Lynn 69-46 on Saturday at home. 

The Mocs feature one of the top trios in the league in forward Anja Fuchs-Robetin, and guards Camille Giardina and Jen Blassage. They all rank in the top-10 of the league in scoring. Fuchs-Robetin (18.9) is second, Giardina (16.9) third and Blassage (13.5) is ninth. Fuchs-Robetin is third in the conference in rebounding at 9.5 per game, and second in shooting at 61.5 percent. Blassage is sixth in assists at 3.7 per game, while Giardina is fourth in steals (2.1) per game.

  • Florida Southern leads the all-time series 46-17, including 20-11 in the HSC.
  • Last season, FSC won both meetings, winning 69-51 in Lakeland and 90-70 in Miami Shores.
  • Despite leading the conference in made three-pointers at 9.1 per game, the Bucs average 26.5 points per game in the paint
  • Barry averages 21.5 points per game off the bench, compared to just 13.3 per game for the opponents
  • The Mocs average just 11.5 points per game off the bench.

Barry is coming off its first loss since falling to No. 3 Bellarmine on Nov. 24 in the Cesar Odio Thanksgiving Classic after falling to Florida Tech on Saturday 96-83. Despite the loss, the Bucs took over the top spot in the Division II Sports Information Directors South Region poll released on Monday. The Buccaneers (10-2, 6-1 SSC) have a one-game lead in the league. Over the past four games, the Bucs have averaged 84.3 points per game, while holding opponents to an average of 76.

Barry's Elvar Fridkriksson remains the league's second-leading scorer at 22.3 points per game. He is third in the conference in assists per game (7.3). Daniel Mortensen is averaging 15.7 points and 8.6 boards in the last three games. Sawyer Glick is averaging 13.4 points, and Sunday Dech 13.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Johannes Dolven is scoring 10.6 points and grabbing 5.6 boards per game.

Florida Southern (9-6, 3-4 SSC) sits in seventh place in the conference after falling 92-90 in overtime to Lynn in Lakeland. Florida Southern is scoring 82.3 in its past four games, while giving up 79.8. The Moccasins beat Florida Tech -- the team Barry lost to Saturday -- by 14 on the road. 

FSC's Jonathan Lawton is the SSC's sixth-leading scorer at  19.8 points per game. Brett Hanson is averaging 16.3 points and 7.5 rebounds, Tyler Ross 11.1 points and 6.7 rebounds and Jack Rauch 10.9 points and 8.3 boards for the Mocs. Two of Florida Southern's conference losses have come in overtime, and all four have been decided by four points or less.
