Women's Tennis Perfect in Regular Season

No. 3 Bucs stymie No. 4 Seahawks, 5-0, on Senior Day

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry women's tennis team wrapped up an unblemished regular season with a 5-0 win over Keiser Sunday on Senior Day.

The Buccaneers, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, beat Keiser, No. 4 in NAIA, by a sweep for the second time this season.

Senior Ana Pain secured the victory when she cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over 40th-ranked Juliana Goncalves at No. 3 singles for the fifth point.

SUMMARY:

  • Isabel Rapisarda Calvo and Dasha Salnikova won the No. 3 doubles match by forfeit when the Seahawks did not field a team. Judith Bohnenkamp also won by forfeit at No. 6 singles.
  • Sonja Larsen and Pain, ranked 18th in the country in doubles, rolled over third-ranked Megane Bianco and Julianna Heino, 8-1, to give the Buccaneers a 2-1 lead. Verena Schmid and Zuza Maciejewska beat Lorene Foreste and Goncalves, 8-1, at No. 2 pairs to complete the doubles sweep.
  • Four singles matches were left unfinished when Pain clinched the team victory. Eighteenth-ranked Salnikova led third-ranked Bianco, 6-2, 1-0. Senior Karina Goia was leading Samantha Guy, 6-3, 1-0 at No. 4 singles. Mara Cerrini trailed Foreste, 2-6, 0-1 at No. 5 singles. Maciejewska, who is seventh in Division II singles, won the first set against the NAIA's 21st-ranked Heino, 6-0, before finding herself down, 3-1, in the second set.  

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry picked up its 13th sweep of the season. 
  • The Buccaneers finished the regular season unbeaten at the No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles positions. Barry won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles versus Keiser in both matches this season.
  • Maciejewska returned to the singles lineup for the first time since March 26. 
  • Larsen was held out of singles for the first time in her career.


ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will compete in the Sunshine State Conference Championship April 20-22 in Bradenton, Florida.
