No. 2 Men's Tennis Shuts Down Eckerd

Barry to play at Lynn Sunday for SSC regular season title

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry men's tennis team Eckerd, 9-0, Saturday at Buccaneer Tennis Center in the first of two weekend conference matches.

The second-ranked Buccaneers will play at No. 8 Lynn Sunday for the Sunshine State Conference regular season championship. 

Barry won the top two doubles positions by 8-5 scores to take a 3-0 lead into singles. That's where Thomas Bugeaud and Nico Dreer each swept their opponents to clinch the victory.

SUMMARY:

  • Fernando Tous and Dreer picked up an 8-1 victory over Bruno Alves and Robert Vazquez at No. 3 doubles. 
  • Fourth-ranked Ahmed Triki and Pierre Montrieul held off Victor Appelqvist and Alasdair Knox, 8-5, at the top pairs position. No. 25-ranked Vivien Versier and Carlos Gomez won by the same score over Eddie Lewis and Matt Spasic at No. 2.
  • Bugeaud was on cruise control in beating Vazquez, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles to put the Buccaneers ahead, 4-0. 46th-ranked Dreer raced to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Knox at the No. 4 position to seal the win.
  • Fabian Pronnet gave the Bucs a 6-0 lead when he defeated Alves, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Triki, who holds the No. 2 ranking in Division II, beat Appelqvist, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. 
  • Twenty sixth-ranked Montrieul was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Spasic at the No. 3 position to extend the Buccaneers' lead to 8-0. Eleventh-ranked Gomez put the finishing touches on the win with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Lewis at No. 2. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry has won its last six matches by shutout. The Bucs have blanked 10 opponents this season. 
  • The Bucs are 11-0 at Buccaneer Tennis Center this season. 
  • The Buccaneers are 36-0 in Sunshine State Conference singles matches, and 18-0 in league doubles matches.
