Baseball Sweeps Saint Leo

Bucs outscored the Lions 12-4 in the series.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry's baseball team swept the Lions after winning both games on Friday. In game one, the Bucs beat Saint Leo 4-3. In game two, Barry came back to win again, this time beating the Lions 4-1.

SUMMARY:
Game 1

  • T1: Alex Mata scored in the first run of the series for the Lions with a single up the middle, scoring Dylan Harris.
  • B1: Claudio Rubiera singled up the middle for the Bucs, scoring Julian Abreu to tie the game up 1-1.
  • B5: Rubiera came back in the fifth to drive in Abreu again, this time with a single to left field.
  • T6: The Lions got two runs in the sixth to take the 3-2 lead.
  • B6: Andrew Rapoza had an RBI single in the sixth to score Jonathan Quintana, knotting the game 3-3.
  • B8: Abreu drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth with a single to through the left side. The Bucs would maintain the 4-3 lead till the end of the game to secure the win.

Game 2

  • B1: Justin Lamazares grounded out to first base to knock in Alexis Monge-Rodriguez to take the 1-0 lead for the Bucs.
  • B2: Michael Escarra drove in Rapoza from third with an RBI single to right field to extend the Buc's lead to two runs. Abreu also doubled down the left field line to score Escarra to make it 3-0 Bucs. Monge batted in one more run, as he hit a dropped sacrifice fly to the left fielder, which scored Juan Sebastian Dayoub to take the 4-0 lead.
  • T4: Saint Leo put up one run in the game, which came in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Derek Gibree.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Lance Elder (3-2) picked up his third win of the season for the Bucs in game one today, after coming in during a tied ball game and giving up zero runs.
  • Jordan Pendleton (4-3) took the loss for Saint Leo after giving up 11 hits and four runs in the first game.
  • Nate Greve (3-3) gathered his third win of the season in game two for Barry, giving up just six hits and one run through seven innings.
  • Eoin McAvinchey (2-5) was dealt the loss in the second game for the Lions, after allowing six hits and four runs.
  • Daniel Broeseker (7) picked up the save in both games for the Bucs, making it seven on the season thus far.
  • This was Barry's first conference sweep since May 2013 when the Bucs swept Eckerd.
  • Barry has gained the advantage in the all-time series with these two wins, leading the Lions 58-57-1.
     

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry continues conference play next weekend, as they travel to Winter Park, Fla. for a three-game series against the Tars of Rollins College, from Apr. 21-22.
