No. 2 Men's Tennis Records Fourth Straight Shutout

Buccaneers blank Moccasins, play at No. 48 FIT sunday

LAKELAND, Fla. – Barry's No. 2 men's tennis team won by shutout for the fourth consecutive match, defeating No. 38 Florida Southern, 9-0, Saturday.

Barry's No. 25-ranked Carlos Gomez and Vivien Versier pulled out a 9-7 win over Fabian Lundberg and Jose de Sario at No. 2 doubles. That gave the Bucs a 3-0 lead heading into singles. It was the fifth straight match the Buccaneers have swept pairs play.

Gomez and Versier each won singles matches, winning a tiebreaker in their respective matches, and Pierre Montrieul fought back after dropping the first set to win the next two in his singles victory.

SUMMARY:

  • Ahmed Triki and Montrieul defeated Laurent Mailloux and Miguel Alvarez-Hevia, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Nico Dreer and Fernando Tous were 8-2 winners over Lundberg and de Sario at the No. 3 position.
  • Thomas Bugeaud was the first to win in singles as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Blaine Miller at the No. 6 position.
  • Second-ranked Triki defeated Lundberg, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. 
  • Gomez, who is 11th in the country, beat de Sario, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, at No. 2. 
  • No. 26 Montrieul responded after falling 6-3 to Mailloux in the first set to win the final two sets, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 position. 
  • No. 46 Dreer posted a 7-5, 7-5 victory in his No. 4 singles match with Alvarez-Hevia. 
  • Versier beat Oscar Soderlund, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), at No. 5 singles.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry is 5-1 versus nationally-ranked opponents this season.
  • Dreer is 9-0 at No. 4 singles.
  • The Buccaneers are 24-0 in Sunshine State Conference singles matches, and 12-0 in league doubles matches.
