No. 6 Women's Tennis Walks Past No. 7 West Florida

Barry returns home 3 p.m. Thursday to meet Auburn-Montgomery

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- These Buccaneer women came what they set out to do -- they ended their Georgia trip where they started.

Unbeaten.

Barry University's sixth-ranked women's tennis team wrapped up its Spring Break trip to Armstrong State with a 7-2 win over No. 7 West Florida Sunday morning. It completed a four-match run through some of the nation's top teams in a high-packed weekend of tennis.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Barry 7, West Florida 2
Records: Barry 13-0, West Florida 8-4

SUMMARY:

  • The Buccaneers' four wins in Savannah came against No. 1 Armstrong, No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific, No. 14 Valdosta State before they dispatched West Florida.
  • Sonja Larsen picked up singles and doubles wins Sunday, as did Ana Pain, Isabel Rapisarda Calvo and Verena Schmid for the Bucs.
  • Barry's Zuza Maciejewska and Schmid shut out Heather Mixon and Samantha Echevarria, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.
  • Karina Goia and Rapisarda Calvo were 8-4 winners over Diana Vlad and Valeria Mantilla at the No. 3 spot. Larsen and Pain held on to beat the South Region's sixth-ranked pairs combination of Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos, 9-7, at the top pairs position.
  • Rapisarda Calvo, Larsen and Pain each won by 6-1, 6-2 scores in singles.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Schmid and Maciejewska's 8-Love doubles win marked the third time a Bucs tandem has blanked its opponents. Twice those shutouts have come at the No. 2 position. Six different Buccaneers have been on the winning end of those 8-0 verdicts.
  • Rapisarda Calvo notched her team-best 12th doubles win of the season.
  • Barry has beaten 11 ranked teams this season. The Bucs have taken down the Nos. 1, 4, 5, 7, 12 and 14 teams in the nation. Barry has yet to surrender more than two games in any match this season.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"It was a good trip for our team. We had four good wins against top Division II opponents."
