Bucs host No. 16 Indy 9 a.m. Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's sixth-ranked women's tennis team remained unbeaten with a convincing win over Auburn-Montgomery Thursday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

The Bucs dropped just their second doubles match of the season, and surrendered their fifth singles match of the year, this time due to a retirement.

Barry's Verena Schmid, Zuza Maciejewska and Sonja Larsen each won two matches, coming up victorious in doubles and singles.

SUMMARY:

  • Verena Schmid and Zuza Maciejewska won their third doubles match together, beating Paula Diaz and Anna Rudolfova at the No. 1 position, 8-3. Sonja Larsen and Judith Bohnenkamp paired for their fourth win in a No. 3 victory over Alejandra Gil and Iris Verweij, 8-3. 
  • Maciejewska was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over 26th-ranked Kelly Southwood at No. 1 singles.
  • Isa Rapisarda Calvo defeated Verweij, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2. 
  • Schmid beat Diaz, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3.
  • Larsen, who is ranked No. 22 in the country, cruised to a 6-1, 6-1. 
  • Karina Goia rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gil at No. 5.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry has not lost the No. 3 doubles position all season. Two of the Bucs' 14 wins at that position have come by forfeit.
  • Larsen improved to 13-0 in singles this year. She is one of five Buccaneers who are unbeaten in singles this season. That list also includes Ana Pain, Mara Cerrini, Goia and Schmid.  
  • Maciejewska improved to 13-0 in pairs play. She is one of five Barry players without a loss in doubles. That group includes Cerrini, Bohnenkamp, Schmid and Dasha Salnikova

Barry hosts No. 16 Indianapolis 9 a.m. Saturday.
