Men's Tennis Win Season Opener

No. 7 Buccaneers sweep Division I Wildcats

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – A bunch of fresh faces on Barry University's seventh-ranked men's tennis team got their taste of the college dual season in the Buccaneers' season-opening victory over NCAA Division I Bethune-Cookman Saturday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

Coach George Samuel used 12 of his 14 players to pick up the first victory of the season.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry swept the doubles to open up a 3-0 lead that settled longtime coach George Samuel into a comfort zone. After recording the pairs sweep, Samuel altered his singles lineup.
  • Carlos Gomez and Thomas Bugeaud were 8-4 winners at the No. 2 pairs position in their first match together.
  • No. 35-ranked Nico Dreer opened his senior season with a win at the No. 1 singles position. Fabian Pronnet was a 6-2, 6-0 win over David Ocampa at No. 2 singles.
  • Newcomers Vivien Versier and Fernando Tous completed the doubles sweep with a 9-7 win over Alvaro Barrera and Ocampa at the No. 3 position in their first pairs match together.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Five new faces saw court time in doubles for the Buccaneers.
  • Ahmed Triki was paired with his seventh different doubles partner of his four-year Bucs career.
  • Barry coach George Samuel moved to within eight wins of his 500th career victory with the Buccaneers men's team.
  • Pronnet returned to the court after missing the fall.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry hosts No. 33 Flagler next Saturday at 1 p.m. during Homecoming Weekend. It will mark the return of former Bucs All-American and assistant coach Thomas Hipp, who is the Director of Tennis at Flagler now.
