MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's No. 6-ranked women's tennis team dominated No. 4 Saint Leo, winning every match Sunday on a day nine-year coach
Avi Kigel moved one win away from a milestone.
Sunday's match featured the debut of Buccaneers newcomer Verena Schmid, who won both of her singles and doubles matches.
"She played pretty well, and will continue to get better," Bucs first-year assistant coach Steve Schram said.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Barry 9, Saint Leo 0
Records: Barry 9-0, 3-0 SSC, Saint Leo 2-3, 1-2 SSC
SUMMARY:
- The Buccaneers still have not lost a match this season in singles in doubles. Originally, it was thought one of the two eight-point pro-set singles matches played last weekend against Florida Tech ended the Bucs' streak, but upon review of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rules, it was determined both of those singles matches did not count for team or individual match scoring purposes. Barry is 48-0 in singles and 27-0 in doubles this season.
- Barry's No. 18-ranked Dasha Salnikova beat No. 24 Marine Beugre-Guyot, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.
- Bucs first-year player Isabel Rapisarda Calvo was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Maja Pindelska at No. 2 singles.
- Barry's 22nd-ranked Sonja Larsen rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kristyna Jurkova at No. 3 singles.
- Schmid beat Fabiola Cardenas, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
- Ana Pain was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Madeleine Gauthier at No. 5 singles.
- Judith Bohnenkamp won 6-4, 6-2 over Katherine Zaatini at No. 6 singles.
- Larsen and Pain coasted to an 8-2 win over Beugre-Guyot and Pindelska at No. 1 doubles.
- Salnikova and Zuza Maciejewska defeated Jurkova and Gauthier, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles.
- Schmid and Rapisarda Calvo beat Cardenas and Zaatini, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Kigel moved within a win of 200 in his Barry career.
- Larsen and Pain played at No. 1 doubles for the first time this season. Two years ago, they went 25-1 together, including a 21-1 record at the top position, to become All-Americans.
- Rapisarda Calvo was paired with her fourth different partner of the season.
