No. 7 Men's Tennis Wins SSC Opener, 9-0

Buccaneers roll over Rollins to improve to 6-0

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University's seventh-ranked men's tennis team opened the Sunshine State Conference season with a convincing 9-0 win over No. 32 Rollins Saturday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

The Buccaneers won the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches by 8-1 scores, and picked up four points in straight-sets singles victories en route to the sweep. Barry's 11th-ranked Carlos Gomez endured a battle from Patrick Sell at No. 1 singles before prevailing, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 13-11, in the final match to finish. Bucs newcomer Vivien Versier was a 7-6 (9-7) winner over Sami Kirberg at No. 5 singles.

Ahmed Triki and Pierre Montrieul defeated seventh-ranked Sell and Kirberg, 8-5, at the No. 1 doubles position.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry's 24th-ranked Gomez and Versier beat Ahmed Albitar and Daniel Ferl, 8-1, at No. 2 pairs. Nico Dreer and Thomas Bugeaud won by the same score over Francesco Racanelli and Ziad Melhaoui at No. 3.
  • No. 35th-ranked Dreer picked up the first singles point after beating Melhaoui, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. Montrieul was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Racanelli at No. 2.
  • Fabian Pronnet beat Ferl, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4. 
  • No. 27-ranked Bugeaud defeated Cody Gubin, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6.   

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Rollins pulled Albitar out at No. 2 singles, moving the rest of its lineup up a spot. 
  • Dreer and Pronnet each won their team-leading fourth singles matches of the season. 
  • Triki and Montrieul's doubles win was the Bucs first over a ranked team this season.
  • Barry coach George Samuel moved within three wins of his 500th career victory with the Buccaneers men's team.


WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"That's good for them," Barry coach George Samuel said of the close matches. "We'll need that when we get into some bigger matches."
