Men's Tennis Sweeps Saint Thomas

Same teams will do it again next week

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University's men's tennis team coasted to a 9-0 win over St. Thomas Wednesday, leaving little doubt this match was ever in jeopardy.

The seventh-ranked Buccaneers lost no more than 2 games in any of the singles matches, and dropped a combined four games in the doubles matches, which also included an exhibition win at the No. 4 position. Lucas Kogachi and Martin Gutierrez won that extra pairs match without giving up a game.

When it was all said and done on a windy afternoon, the Bucs got the result they wanted to keep their unbeaten streak alive.

Records: Barry 4-0, St. Thomas 0-3

SUMMARY:

  • Daniel Ventura, Thomas Bugeaud, Fernando Tous, Flavio Matteoli and Ajdin Tahirovic each were double winners in this one. Only Tahirovic's singles match ended prematurely when his original opponent, Rasmus Lindscrom, retired with the Bucs No. 5 player leading 3-0 in the first set. Tahirovic went on to win an exhibition match afterwards in straight sets.
  • Gutierrez defeated Juan Abia Villamirzar, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. Tous was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over the NAIA's 46th-ranked Fabrice Bissainthe at the No. 3 position. Matteoli won 6-2, 6-0 over Dimitri Bird at No. 4.
  • Tahirovic and Ventura rolled over Brandon Vilez and Michele Coletta, 8-0, at No. 3 pairs. Matteoli and Victor Ravier were 8-1 winners over Bird and Lindscrom at No. 2. Bugeaud and Tous beat Kevin Cubela and Mauricio Fernandez, 8-3, at the top position.
  • Ventura won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, taking down Cubela with a confident display of tennis. Bugeaud, the 27th-ranked player in NCAA Division II, picked up his first singles victory in his first opportunity as a Buccaneer when he defeated Jermain Le Grand, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 2 spot.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Ventura's win at the No. 1 singles position was the first of his career. He won at the No. 4 spot in the lineup earlier this year.
  • Gutierrez's convincing victory was the first of his collegiate career.
  • Barry coach George Samuel moved within five wins of his 500th career victory with the Buccaneers men's team.
