Volleyball Falls at Eckerd

Bucs head to No. 24 Saint Leo Saturday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team lost to Eckerd Friday night, 25-8, 17-25, 25-21, 26-24. 

Barry tried to make a nice comeback after falling behind, and nearly forced a fifth set, but a late collapse in the fourth allowed Eckerd to escape.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry fell behind early and never recovered in the first set. The Bucs hit -.179 in the first set, while the Tritons had a .211 attack percentage. Barry managed just three kills in the opening set.
  • The Bucs turned the tables in the second set, racing out to a 10-6 lead on an ace by Kristina Filimonova, Eckerd hitting error and Kishara Gordon kill. Genesis Castillo had back-to-back kills, and the Bucs extended the lead to 14-7. Johanna Voss and Gordon's combo block made it 17-8. Voss had a kill, and Castillo added another to pull the Buccaneers within set point before Juliana Tirabassi converted a pass from Gabriela Jansen for a kill to tie the match at 1-1.
  • In the third set, the Bucs fell behind 18-12 on a Tritons ace. Filimonova's block made it 22-19 to pull Barry within three, but the Tritons held on.
  • Barry led 14-7 in the fourth on a kill by Gordon. Eckerd cut it to 19-17 before Voss and Filimonova's block made it 22-18. Following a Tritons point that cut Barry's lead to three, Voss put down a ball. But the Tritons tied it at 23-23 to force a Bucs timeout. Eckerd went on to winn three of the last four points to pull out the win.
  • The Bucs had a .173 attack percentage, while the Tritons hit .207.

NOTEWORTHY:.
  • Both teams had 21 attack errors.
  • Barry outblocked its 14th opponent of the season.
  • Castillo had 13 kills, marking the fourth time she's had over 10 this year. She hit .303.
  • Gordon had nine kills, Voss eight and Jansen seven.
  • Madison Yarbrough had a career-best 19 digs, marking the second straight match she's been in double figures on the defensive end.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will play at No. 24 Saint Leo Saturday.
