Bucs Drop Volleyball Match to Tampa

Barry hosts No. 22 Florida Southern on Senior Day Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry's volleyball team got out to a quick start, but couldn't sustain the momentum Friday night. The Buccaneers fell to Tampa, 23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-20.

It was the third straight match the Bucs have won the first set, but dropped the match.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry held the Spartans to an .095 attack percentage in the first set. The Bucs jumped out to a 13-8 lead on a block by Stassy Samokhvalova and Kishara Gordon. Tampa rattled off seven straight points to go on top, 15-13. The Bucs broke a tie with a 4-0 run on three straight Spartans attack errors and a block by Johanna Voss and Gordon to reclaim a 21-17 lead. Tampa tied it again at 23-23, but Gordon and Jaeda Allen banged home two straight kills to put away the opening set. Tampa had 16 kills and 12 errors in the set. Barry had 10 kills and four errors.
  • The Spartans bounced back in the second set when the Buccaneers struggled on the attack with 13 kills and 10 errors. Kristina Filimonova's kill on a setup from Maegan Cuesta put the Bucs ahead 11-10. Barry bumped its lead to 17-14 on an ace by Cuesta before Tampa rallied to take a 21-20 lead. The Bucs moved within set point when Filimonova and Voss combined on a block to put Barry ahead, 24-23. But Tampa won the final three points to tie the match at the intermission.
  • The Bucs fell into a deep hole after the break as the Spartans rolled to a 20-9 lead in the third set. A kill by Filimonova pulled Barry within 23-16, but it was too little too late. The Bucs hit .048 in the set, and converted 45 percent of its sideout chances. The Spartans hit .171, and had a 63 percent sideout ratio.
  • Tampa took a 15-10 lead in the fourth. Allen had two kills and Gordon another during a 3-0 Bucs spurt to pull within 21-15. The Spartans won the next three points before Barry showed some mettle, rattling off five straight points with its back against the wall, to stay alive. Samokhvalova, Allen and Filimonova all had kills during the final push that pulled the Bucs within 24-20 before the Spartans wrapped it up.

NOTEWORTHY:
  • Barry has dropped five matches after winning the opening set this season. 
  • Filimonova and Gordon each had 11 kills. Allen finished with nine. Genesis Castillo had six.
  • Filimonova recorded her 100th block of the season in the first set. It is the second straight year she's had at least 100 blocks, becoming the fourth Buccaneer to do so.
  • Juliana Tirabassi had 19 digs and 17 assists, and Cuesta 14 digs and 15 assists. Madison Yarborough had 15 digs.
  • Allen and Castillo will play their final matches at the Health and Sports Center on Saturday.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will host No. 22 Florida Southern at 4 p.m. Saturday on Senior Day.
