Women's Soccer Sloshes Past Tritons

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers clinched the #2 seed in the Sunshine State Conference women's soccer tournament with a 3-2 win over Eckerd on a rain-soaked Buccaneer Field on Saturday night.

SUMMARY:

  • 19:11 - Eckerd got on the board first as Paula Astiazaran sent a skipping shot that hopped over keeper Melanie Ziegner's arms and into the goal. 
  • 22:03 - Molly Sharpe evened the match in the 23rd minute. After a corner, Jade Adams carried the ball to the end line and crossed the ball back to Sharpe who scored from six yards out.
  • 34:05 - The Bucs took the lead on a goal by Sarah Wignall in the 35th minute. Carissa Sanchez sent a hard cross in from the left side and Wignall one-timed the ball out of the air for the goal.
  • 72:06 - Christy Grimshaw gave the Bucs an important insurance goal in the 73rd minute. Yanni Asson passed the ball to Wignall at the top of the 18-yard box. Wignall sent a cross to top of the six and Grimshaw found the open space for the goal.
  • 76:05 - Astiazaran converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute after the Bucs were whistled for a hand ball in the box.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Bucs dominated play, out-shooting the Tritons 28-6, including 15-5 on goal. They also had 10 corners to just four for Eckerd. 
  • Ziegner had three saves, including one with 0:03 seconds left on a hard shot from Astiazaran that nearly tied the game.
  • Casey Winn had 12 saves to keep the Tritons from being blown out.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs, who earned the second seed in the SSC Tournament, have a bye in the quarterfinals. They will face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between #3 Florida Southerrn and #6 Florida Tech on Friday, Nov. 3 at Nova Southeastern's NSU Soccer Complex. Match time is to be determined.
