Volleyball Takes Tampa to 5

Bucs play at Lynn Tuesday

TAMPA, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team took Tampa to five sets before succumbing, 25-13, 23-25, 25-23, 26-28, 15-9, Saturday.

The Buccaneers and Spartans battled to 11 ties and six lead changes in both the pivotal third and fourth sets. But Tampa pulled away in the end. The Bucs outhit the Spartans, .253 to .230, and outblocked Tampa, 11-8.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry fell behind in the first set 15-7, following a five-point Spartans run. Genesis Castillo had three kills in the opening set. The Bucs had nine kills and five attack errors in the set. Tampa hit .520 with 15 kills and two errors.
  • Nathaly Alvarez gave Barry a 9-5 lead in the second set when she ripped off an ace, and Kishara Gordon and Castillo followed it up with a block before Castillo banged down her fourth kill of the match. The Spartans used a 4-0 run to cut it to 12-11. But Alexis Boutin came on to serve the Bucs to a 15-11 lead with back-to-back points. Tampa went on another 4-0 run to tie it at 15-15 before Castillo pounded a kill. The Spartans took a 17-16 lead before Johanna Voss banged down a kill. Jaeda Allen's kill pushed Barry ahead 20-18. Tampa ran off three straight points to go ahead, 22-21. Gordon had a kill, and then combined with Castillo on a block to put the Bucs back on top, 23-22. Tampa tied the set on a Bucs serving error, but Castillo had a solo block, and Kristina Filimonova and Gabriela Jansen came up with a combo block to tie the match at 1-1. Filimonova had five kills in the set. 
  • In the third set, the Spartans used a 4-0 run to take a 9-7 lead before Allen banged down her eighth kill and then had an ace. The Spartans climbed ahead by three before Voss and Gordon had a block to pull the Buccaneers within 17-16. Tampa went back up, 20-17, before Allen pounded her 10th kill. Barry tied it at 22 on a kill by Filimonova. Tampa won three of the final four points to take a 2-1 lead. Barry hit .381 in the third set.
  • Filimonova's kill tied things up at 10-10 in the fourth set before the Spartans went on a 4-0 run. Allen had two straight kills to put the Bucs up, 17-16. Tampa crept ahead, 22-18, with a 3-0 run. Madison Yarborough served the Bucs into a 23-22 lead as part of a 5-0 run. Filimonova had a kill on a setup from Maegan Cuesta to tie it at 25-25. Voss and Filimonova's block kept it tied at 26, and the Bucs finished the set on a 3-0 run when Filimonova pounded her 15th kill.
  • Barry trailed 6-2 in the decisive set. Allen had a kill to pull the Bucs within two, but the Spartans used an ace to pad the lead back to 8-4. Castillo's kill pulled Barry within 8-6. Tampa used a 4-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. Jansen had a kill to stop the Spartans' run. But Tampa closed it out. 

NOTEWORTHY:
  • Alvarez had double-digit assists for the eighth time this season. Tirabassi has had double figure assists in every match this season in Barry's 6-2 offense.
  • Castillo had double-digit kills for the second time this season. Her 14 kills is a season high.
  • Alexis Boutin had 18 digs, which is two shy of her season high.
  • It was the third straight match Barry and Tampa have went to five sets. 
  • The Bucs are 2-1 in five-set matches this season.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will play at Lynn 7 p.m. Tuesday in Boca Raton.
