No. 6 Men's Basketball Tops Sharks

Barry returns home Wednesday night

DAVIE, Fla. – Barry shook off a rusty shooting performance to beat rival Nova Southeastern for its 15th win of the season Saturday.

The Buccaneers maintained its perch at the top of the Sunshine State Conference by a game over Eckerd, whom Barry will host next Saturday. The Bucs will spend the next six games in South Florida, beginning with Wednesday's home game versus Florida Tech on First Responders Night in the Health & Sports Center.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry shot 39.7 percent from the field, in large part to a 12-for-36 performance in the first half. But the Bucs canned 19 triples in 45 attempts to put the Sharks away.
  • The Buccaneers built a 12-point halftime lead, but Nova Southeastern pulled within 58-54 on Nikita Orap's three-pointer with 6:31 to go. Barry went on a 14-3 run to extend the lead back to 11 on Daniel Mortensen's layup at the 4:05 mark.
  • Elvar Fridriksson hit back-to-back 3-pointers -- the latter with 43 seconds remaining -- to put the game away. Arie Williams beat the buzzer with the final triple of the game to add the icing on the cake.
  • Barry sank 8 of 9 free throws, recovering from an off night earlier in the week.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Arie Williams passed Yunio Barrueta for second place on the school's all-time three-point field goals list. Williams hit four triples Saturday, and has 209 in his four-year Bucs career. He finished with 12 points.
  • Adrian Gonzalez was held under double figures for the first time all season. He finished with five points. 
  • Barry's bench outscored Nova Southeastern's 20-0 in the first half. NSU's bench outscored Barry's 11-0 in the second half, 
  • Mortensen had his first career double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
  • The Bucs' 19 triples matched a season high.
  • Barry coach Butch Estes improved to 2-2 at NSU Arena in what could be the Bucs final meeting against Sharks coach Gary Tuell, who announced he will retire at the end of the season.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry hosts Florida Tech on First Responders Night 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
