BELMONT, Calif. -- Barry University's volleyball team swept Academy of Art at the Route 92 Showdown Saturday. The Buccaneers won 25-22, 25-18, 25-19.
The Bucs (2-1) will meet host Notre Dame de Namur at 10 p.m. Saturday to finish the West Coast trip.
Barry took a 12-8 lead in the first set on
Ariel Mangum's service point. The Urban Knights (1-2) rallied to take a 19-15 lead before
Juliana Tirabassi ripped off three straight aces in a five-point run to move Barry back in front, 20-19.
Kaitlin Drake's kill pushed the Bucs lead to 23-20, and Kristina Filiminova put away back-to-back balls to close the first set.
Jenny Trinidad's ace opened up a 14-11 lead in the second set.
Brittany Reynolds kill and an ace by
Amanda Brill pushed the Bucs up 18-13. Reynolds' kill made it 21-16, and Drake banged home two straight balls to move the Bucs within set point. After a sideout,
Ivana Didanovic put away a kill to give Barry a 2-0 lead.
The Buccaneers hit .294 in the second set, pounding 13 kills against three errors in 34 attacks. Academy of Art hit .056 with eight kills in the set.
Tirabassi's ace capped a six-point Bucs run in the third set for an 11-4 lead.
Madison Yarborough's ace in a three-point service run extended the Bucs lead to 15-5. Filiminova put away a kill for a 21-15 lead. Drake and Didanovic had back-to-back kills to make it 24-17, and three points later the Bucs wrapped up the sweep on an Urban Knights attack error.
The Bucs fired off 11 aces, while the Urban Knights managed two. Barry hit .168. Academy of Art hit .099. The Bucs had eight blocks and the Urban Knights six.
Didanovic had 12 kills and three blocks while hitting .385. Drake finished with eight kills and nine digs. Filiminova had six kills and five blocks, and hit .353. Tirabassi had 17 assists and five aces. Mangum had 22 digs and an ace.Â
