Bucs late comeback bid comes up short

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team made a late comeback bid at rival Lynn Tuesday night, but the Buccaneers fell short, dropping the match 25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21.

The Buccaneers (7-3, 1-1 Sunshine State Conference) will host Florida Tech at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Barry hit .062, while the Fighting Knights (7-3, 1-1) finished with a .142 attack percentage. The Bucs committed 28 attack errors, and Lynn had 30.

Trailing 2-0 in the match, Barry recovered from an 8-0 deficit in the third set when it ran off five straight points on Ariel Mangum's serve. Kills by Kristina Filimonova, Brittany Reynolds and Jaeda Allen pulled the Bucs to within three. Genesis Castillo and Ivana Didanovic's block, a Juliana Tirabasi ace and an attack error by Lynn's Cleuza Porto tied the set at 10-10.

Both teams traded points over the next 11 serves until Allen sent a kill to the floor to give the Buccaneers a 17-15 lead. Two Fighting Knights errors and a kill by Allen pushed the Bucs on top 21-18. Allen banged down two more balls to make it 24-20, and Castillo's kill gave the Bucs the set.

Barry and Lynn went back and forth in the fourth set until a kill by Allen and block by Didanovic and Castillo spotted the Bucs a 12-10 lead. Allen served an ace to keep the Bucs lead at two, but Lynn capitalized on two Bucs hitting errors to reclaim the lead. Castillo's kill kept the Bucs within one before the Fighting Knights crept ahead 19-16. Filimonova's kill and a Lynn attack error tied it up at 20-20. But Lynn was the beneficiary of three Bucs hitting errors and a service error down the stretch.

The final set witnessed 14 ties and six lead changes.

Allen had 12 kills, 13 digs, two aces and two blocks. Didanovic had eight kills and six blocks. Filimonova and Eva Raat each had five kills and combined for five blocks. Jenny Trinidad had 16 assists, and Tirabassi 12. Mangum had 13 digs, and Kat Espinosa 11.
