Softball Soars Over Eagles

Bucs sweep doubleheader to take series

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Like day after night, it was a whole different story for the Barry Buccaneers on Saturday as they swept the Embry-Riddle Eagles 6-1 and 5-0 in a softball doubleheader at Buccaneer Field.

After dropping the series opener on Friday night, the Bucs (19-14) came out with something to prove on Saturday and got two strong pitching performances from a pair of freshmen to deliver the sweep of the Eagles (28-11).

In game one, Lynsey Duncan (1-3) earned her first career win with a complete-game, four-hit gem. She allowed just one run and struck out three to ensure the rubber game.

The Bucs jumped all over Eagle starter Kassidy Simons (13-4) in the third inning. Megan Copeland drew a one-out walk and Duncan followed with a single to left. Dee Espinosa drove in both runs with a double into the gap in left-center. One out later, Sam Busekrus ripped a double down the left-field line to score Espinosa and Kristina Pazienza followed with another shot down the line to drive in Busekrus.

After the Eagles belted a solo homer in the top of the sixth, the Bucs responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Busekrus was hit by a pitch and Pazienza doubled down the left-field line again. Pinch-hitter Jasmine Harris plated both runs with a single to right-center.

Simons took the loss in a complete-game effort for the Eagles. She allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk and struck out five.

In the rubber game, Anieliese Palmeiro (7-3) tossed a four-hit shutout and also went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Bucs to the win.

The Bucs got after Friday night's winner Robi Zimmerman (6-4) in the second inning. Cheyanne Head had an infield single and Busekrus reached when Zimmerman's throw on her sacrifice attempt was low. After Palmeiro walked to load the bases, Head scored on a ground out by Alayna Gallagher. Kayla Ogle drove in a pair with a single to right for a 3-0 lead.

The score stood until the bottom of the sixth when the Bucs added a couple of insurance runs. Kristina Osorio drew a leadoff walk and Busekrus again reached on an error. Palmeiro made it hurt with a two-run double to left.

Palmeiro shutout the Eagles on four hits and a walk and struck out three. Zimmerman, who allowed three unearned runs in two innings on two hits and two walks, took the loss.

The Bucs travel next weekend to Lake Island Park to face the Rollins Tars in a Saturday-Sunday series.
