Softball Closes Out Sweep of Tritons

Palmeiro sets single-season save record

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers completed their Sunshine State Conference softball sweep of the Eckerd Tritons on Saturday morning, winning the finale 3-1 at the Turley Complex.

The Bucs (17-13, 11-7 SSC) scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and pitchers Geneva Santos (11-6) and Anieliese Palmeiro made the runs stand up.

In the second inning, Sam Busekrus led off with a single and came around on a base hit by Alayna Gallagher.

In the third, Busekrus ripped a double to bring in Lynsey Duncan who had led off with a single.

In the fourth, Kayla Ogle had a two-out single and stole second. Megan Copeland followed with a RBI triple to right.

Santos carried a shutout into the seventh inning, but ran into some trouble as the Tritons (23-16-1, 7-8 SSC) loaded the bases with two outs. After Santos walked Carrie Shere to force in a run, Palmeiro came on to get Rachael Luckett to foul out to end the game.

Santos allowed a run on six hits and four walks and struck out five to earn her 11th win. Palmeiro picked up her second save of the series and fourth overall, which leads the team and breaks the previous school record of three, held by nine pitchers, most recently Taylor Sabol in 2013 and 2014.

Nikole Van Gennep (14-11) took the loss for the third time in the series. She allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks and struck out two.

Duncan and Busekrus both had two hits in the game.

The Bucs come back home to host the Embry-Riddle Eagles next weekend.
