SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Barry baseball suffered a setback today as it fell 12-11, 19-13 to Sunshine State Conference foe, Saint Leo in a doubleheader.
In the first game, the Buccaneers took an early 2-0 lead off a
Ramon Valdez double to left center that brought in
Khalil Denson and a fielding error allowing Valdez to score soon after.
Saint Leo took the lead in the 3rd, scoring six runs off of two RBI singles and three-run homer to left field.Â
The Lions added on to their advantage in the 5th, scoring on a wild pitch and RBI sacrifice fly to make it 8-2.
SLU would add two more runs in the 7th and 8th innings, putting the Bucs into a large hole going into the 9th.Â
In the 9th however, the Bucs answered the challenged with a furious comeback, scoring nine runs thanks to RBI from
Ryan Baldwin,
Julian Abreu,
Kyle Pangallo,
Mike Diaz, Denson and an
Alexander DeGoti home run to left field that brought in two more runs.Â
The Lions were not taken out of the fight, however, scoring the tying run with a RBI single up the middle. The game would go into extra innings and in the 10th, SLU would seal it with a RBI triple that brought in the winning run.Â
SLU closer Michael Dunnington earned the win in a 1.1 IP outing, Bucs closer
Nate Greve went to 2-2 on the season.
In the second game of the day, the two teams trading blow after blow, scoring a combined 32 runs from 29 hits.
Barry took a 13-6 lead after 5.5 innings, thanks to RBI from Baldwin, Valdez, Quintana, Abreu, Alfreddi Ramos and Denson.Â
SLU would mount another comeback, scoring 13 runs in the last three innings to claim the win and the series.
Lions closer Zach Whitaker went to 5-1 on the year with a 4.2 IP, three strikeout performance. Barry reliever
Erik Bauer went to 0-4.
The Bucs now stand at 20-20 on the season and 4-11 in the conference, SLU goes to 24-16 and 7-8 in SSC play.
Up next for Barry is a return to Feinbloom Field to take on SSC opponent Rollins in a three-game series beginning Aprill 22 at 6 PM.                        Â
