DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened Sunshine State Conference softball play with an 8-2 win over Nova Southeastern at the AD Griffin Complex on Friday night.
The Bucs (4-5, 1-0 SSC) pounded out 13 hits, including three doubles and a triple, in an offensive barrage that led to the win.
In the first, Kayla Ogle singled and stole second. Megan Copeland walked and Cheyanne Head followed with a double to left center that scored Ogle. Copeland was thrown out trying to score. Dee Espinosa followed with an RBI double of her own and later came home when Sam Busekrus drew a bases-loaded walk off Sharks' starter Daija Jones (2-4).
The Bucs tacked on two more in the second. Ogle walked and went to second on a wild pitch. She scored on a Head single and Head came around on a stolen base and a pair of wild pitches.
Alayna Gallagher scored in the third on a triple by Hunter Mars.
The Sharks (3-7, 0-1 SSC) plated a pair of runs in the fifth to trim the lead to 6-2, scoring on a walk with the bases loaded and an RBI single by Katey Blummer.
Barry answered in the sixth. Ogle walked again and went to second on another wild pitch by Jones, who threw seven in the ball game. Head, who finished 4-for-5, delivered an RBI single. After head went to second on a wild pitch, Espinosa knocked her in with a single to center.
Geneva Santos (3-1) went the distance to earn the win for the Bucs. She allowed two runs on six hits and seven walks and struck out 12. Jones gave up eight runs on 13 hits and six walks and struck out just three.
In addition to Head who scored three and drove in three, Espinosa had three hits, including a double and drove in two. Santos and Mars each had two hits, while Ogle scored three runs. Rachel Minier had two hits to lead the Sharks.
The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
