DAVIE, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers completed a Sunshine State Conference softball series sweep of the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Saturday, winning 16-2 in five innings and 8-5 at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
Game 1
Barry (6-5, 3-0 SSC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead scoring twice in the first and added another four runs in the second.
After a scoreless third, the Buccaneers erupted with eight hits and scored 10 runs in the top half of the fourth frame to take a 16-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Sharks (3-9, 0-3 SSC) managed to trim the Bucs' lead to 16-2.
Anieliese Palmiero (2-2) worked a complete-game for the win. She allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out three. Erica Winter (1-4) took the loss for the Sharks. She went all five innings, but allowed 16 runs on 15 hits and seven walks.
Megan Copeland went 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. She and Kayla Ogle both scored three runs. Cheyanne Head was 2-for-2 with a walk and pair of doubles and drove in three. Ashley Fernandez had a two-run homer as part of the 10-run fourth.
Game 2
The Bucs built a big early lead thanks to some walks and defensive miscues by the Sharks. Head had a two-run double in the first after an error put runners on the corners.
Barry put up five more runs on just two hits in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead after three innings of play. Barry drew five walks in the inning and scored their runs on a two-run single by Hunter Mars, a wild pitch, an RBI single by Geneva Santos and an Alayna Gallagher sacrifice fly.
The Bucs' final run came on an RBI double by Dee Espinosa in the sixth.
The Sharks rallied back with four runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-5. Jessie Brown had a two-run double in the fifth and Rachel Minier and Dakota Villella had back-to-back doubles in the sixth.
Santos (4-1) worked six innings, leaving after giving up a leadoff double to Haley Gonzales in the seventh. She allowed five runs (two earned) on 12 hits and a walk. Palmeiro came in a set the Sharks down in order in the seventh to earn her first save. Daija Jones (2-4) took the complete-game loss. She allowed eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and six walks and struck out three.
Head went 3-for-3 with two more doubles, scoring two and driving in two more. Minier was 4-for-4 for the Sharks and scored twice.
The Bucs host Ave Maria on Saturday, Feb. 27 in a doubleheader at noon.
