WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened the Sailfish Showdown with a 4-0 win over Washburn on Friday afternoon at Tropicana Field in the Rinker Athletic Campus.
Anieliese Palmiero (1-1) tossed her first career shutout to earn her first career win. She scattered four hits and five walks and struck out seven.
The Bucs (3-1) broke through in the bottom of the first. Alayna Gallagher was hit by a pitch and scored ahead of Dee Espinosa's double. That would be the only run Palmiero would need.
Barry scored three insurance runs in the fourth. Ashley Fernandez, Kristina Osorio and Lynsey Duncan had singles to load the bases with no outs. With one out, Sam Busekrus hit into a fielder's choice to drive in Lexi Corrente, who had run for Osorio. After a walk by Kayla Ogle, Gallagher singled up the middle to drive in Duncan and Busekrus.
Ashley Willis (0-1) took the loss for the Ichabods (0-1). She gave up four runs on only five hits, walked four and struck out four. Erin Kenney had two of the four hits for the Ichabods.
The Bucs face the Pirates of Armstrong State at 5:00 pm.
