Women's Basketball Picks Up SSC Road Win

Bucs escape Lions' den with 71-61 win

ST. LEO, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers rallied for a 71-61 win over the Saint Leo Lions at the Bowman Center On Saturday in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Lions jumped out to an early lead behind the play of senior Chelsy Springs. She shot 8-of-8 from the field in the quarter, scoring 17 points, as the Lions led 23-15 after the first period. Julia Paulin did her best to keep it close, hitting 3-of-3, all from three-point range.
  • 2Q - Barry clamped down on the defense, holding Springs to just 1-of-2 shooting in the second period, as they outscored the Lions 18-11. After Izabell Skoogh hit a three-pointer to put Saint Leo up 34-27 with 1:31 left, Juhnae Richardson and Lauren Seyranian hit back-to-back triples to trim the lead to 34-33 at the break. Richardson led the Bucs with eight points in the period.
  • 3Q - In the third period, it was eight points from Elin Ekdahl that led the Bucs to finally take the lead. Barry closed the frame on a 17-7 run. Richardson hit a three-pointer to tie the game 43-43 with 4:50 to play and Ekdahl and Barbara Cousiño helped the Bucs to a 54-50 lead.
  • 4Q - Ekdahl and Cousiño keyed a 17-11 fourth quarter to salt the game away. Barry opened the final quarter with a 7-0 run, capped by a layup by Richardson with 6:19 remaining. The Lions closed to within five points on a three-pointer by Rachel Dotson at 2:49, but Cousiño scored the final five points of the game to make the final score 71-61.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Paulin scored a career-high 17 points, hitting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. She led four Buccaneers in double figures. Ekdahl had 14 points, while Cousiño and Richardson each had 13.
  • The Bucs' balance overcame a career night from Springs who scored 28 points and shot 13-of-20 from the floor.
  • Seyranian had a game-high nine rebounds and Lexy Schoonover added seven as the Bucs held a narrow 32-31 lead on the boards.
  • The Bucs hit 12 three-pointers, lead by Paulin. Ekdahl added three and Richardson and Cousiño had two each.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry takes the next week off for exam week, but return to action on Saturday, Dec. 10 at Florida Southern.
